Lunga Siyo[1] is a South African business executive, currently serving as the chief executive officer (CEO)[2] of Telkom Consumer[3] and Small Business at Telkom SA SOC Ltd. He is recognized for his contributions to the telecommunications industry, particularly in driving Telkom’s mobile business growth, helping SMBs[4] and digital transformation initiatives.

Early life and education

Lunga Siyo was born and raised in Mdantsane, a township approximately 15 kilometers outside East London in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Mdantsane is the largest township by population in the province and is known for producing prominent figures in politics, sports, and business.[5] Siyo was brought up by his grandmother, and his early exposure to the township’s business and consumer dynamics shaped his leadership perspective.[6] Siyo holds a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from Milpark Business School and a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University.[7] During his time at Oxford Brookes, he was actively involved in student leadership, serving as a school residence leader, playing for the basketball team, and participating in student politics.[8]

Early career

Before joining Telkom, Siyo held senior and executive positions at several prominent companies,[9] including MTN, BP South Africa, Santam, and Standard Bank. His experience spans telecommunications, media, technology, oil and gas, and financial services, with a focus on strategy, general management, sales, marketing, digital transformation, and finance.[7] He has over 20 years of professional experience across multiple regions in Africa.[10]

Telkom

Siyo joined Telkom SA SOC Ltd in May 2018 as CEO of Telkom Small and Medium Business. In this role, he led the transformation of Telkom’s Yellow Pages from a print-based directory to a digital e-commerce platform called Yep!, aimed at supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by providing an online marketplace.[6] On October 1, 2021, Siyo was appointed CEO of Telkom Consumer, succeeding Serame Taukobong, who transitioned to Group CEO Designate.[11] As CEO of Telkom Consumer, Siyo has overseen the company’s mobile division, which grew to over 21.5 million customers by 2024. Under his leadership, Telkom Consumer reported a 2.1% revenue increase to R12.960 billion, driven by an 18.8% year-on-year growth in active mobile customers to 16.3 million and a 6.1% rise in mobile data revenue.[12] Siyo has been instrumental in advancing Telkom’s data-led strategy, introducing value propositions in fintech, e-commerce, and mobile payments.[6] He spearheaded the launch of Telkom’s 5G fixed-wireless access services in 2022, with plans to expand mobile 5G offerings as device affordability improves.[13][14] Additionally, he launched the Telkom Business Blaze podcast series in 2024 to provide insights and tools for South African SMEs.[15]

Leadership style and recognition

Siyo is noted for fostering a “happy culture” at Telkom, emphasizing high performance and collaboration. He introduced initiatives like “Yep talks,” where employees share achievements in brief, informal presentations to promote a positive work environment.[8] His leadership approach distinguishes between managing tasks and leading strategically, focusing on stakeholder engagement and customer-centric innovation.[6] Siyo’s contributions to South Africa’s telecommunications sector are seen as vital for the country’s transition toward the Fourth Industrial Revolution.[16] His ability to articulate insights across strategy, entrepreneurship, and economics has earned him praise from colleagues and industry peers.[8]

Personal life

Little is publicly known about Siyo’s personal life. He has expressed a commitment to supporting South Africa’s economic growth by empowering SMEs, reflecting his roots in Mdantsane and his understanding of grassroots business dynamics.
