Lurking Unknown
The Lurking Unknown is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He is a demon, one of the Fear Lords, who has clashed with Doctor Strange and Thor. The character first appeared in Thor #136 (Jan 1967).
Fictional character biography
Odin had his vizier summon the Lurking Unknown and locked Jane Foster in a darkened chamber as part of a test of her worthiness to marry Thor. Terrified, she called out for help from Thor, who burst into the room and defeated the Lurking Unknown. A rock troll struck the tuning fork which summoned the Lurking Unknown, and Thor fell under its fear power. Thor was aided by Sif in defeating the Lurking Unknown, causing it to return to its realm.[volume & issue needed]
The Lurking Unknown was later summoned to the Halls of Fear to join the other Fear Lords in a plot to gain control of Earth. Doctor Strange was able to defeat the Lurking Unknown and imprison him within a magical shield.[volume & issue needed]
The Fear Lords later met to discuss the Serpent's attacks on Earth.[volume & issue needed] Loki tricked them into a meeting to tell them about Nightmare's scheme to harvest the fear brought by the Serpent to become the new King of Fear, leading to a battle that resulted in a stalemate.[volume & issue needed]
