Luso-Greeks

The Luso-Greeks are a Greek population of Portuguese origin living in villages of Central Corfu. They are descendants of Portuguese settlers in Corfu during the [[Venetian rule in the Ionian Islands |Venetian era of the island]]. The villages that are populated by the Luso-Greeks are Kato Garouna, Kato Pavliana, and Kastellanoi Mesis. The population is currently about 1,000 people living in their villages. The villages still hold ceremonies such as the São Pantaleão ceremony, tied to the arrival of their ancestors from Porto and near areas. Their language is Greek but with many words borrowed from the Portuguese language.
