History[edit]

It began making fire prevention wire mesh glass, being recommended by the British Fire Prevention Committee.[1]

In the 1940s, the site had around 600 workers. The site near the River Trent opened in 1941.

In the 1950s it made aluminium shelving.[2]

It went into a joint-venture with an Essex manufacturer of aluminium windows. This joint-venture lasted until 1962, due to the product range of Luxfer changing.[3]

In 1983, a director of the company was chairman of the Fire Extinguishing Trades Association (merged in 2007 to become the Fire Industry Association).[4]

Ownership[edit]

In the mid-1970s, the company was 33% owned by the Canadian company Alcan,[5] being bought by Alcan in April 1976.[6][7]

In March 1995, Alcan wanted to sell its British interests.[8] In February 1996, Alcan's British interests were bought by British Aluminium, a £200m management buyout.[9]

Product range[edit]

From 1976 it made composite gas cylinders for SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) equipment for firefighters. It also makes diving cylinders. It made the aluminium container for nuclear fuel elements.

In the late 1980s, it made around 25% of the world's diving cylinders.

Awards[edit]

In April 1975 it won a Queen's Award for Export.[10] It was awarded on Wednesday 18 February 1976, with another award from the Institute of Export and International Trade (former International Export Association).[11]

Visits[edit]

On Tuesday 29 April 1947, the site was visited by the Minister of Supply, with Sir George Turner.[12]

The Secretary of State for Employment visited on Thursday 31 March 1994.[13][14]

In 1973, it took over an Alcan plant at Riverside, California.[15]

In 1990, it built a $15m gas cylinder plant in Graham, North Carolina.[16]
