Lykon Automotive Building Collapse

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

On May 4, 2015, a building addition under construction collapsed while undergoing construction, trapping 2 workers under the piles of rubble and debris. Workers were on the top of the newly built walls when they collapsed in on themselves, two were injured, one seriously.[1] The construction was part of an addition to the Lykon Automotive garage, and was approved by the township [2]. OSHA reports issued following an investigation imply that the township approved plans were deviated from by the construction crew hired to erect the walls.[3] The collapsed walls were constructed by PKB contractors. Photographs from the scene show that the walls were not reinforced with rebar and were not properly braced as per the approved plans and OSHA industry standards.[4]

The force of the collapse caused large portions of the outer walls to crumble causing the workers and roof trusses to fall to the ground.[5] Bristol Township Fire Marshall Kevin Dippolito supervised the scene as the remainder of the unsafe and unsecured walls and cinder blocks were taken down.[6] Reports indicate wind may have also been a factor in the collapse of the walls. Investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing, but the OSHA report states: “the block walls were not observed to be braced and a danger still existed for a possible collapse of the walls”.[7]
