LyricFind is a global music lyrics licensing company that provides legal lyric solutions to music services, headquartered in Toronto, Canada
History[edit]
Darryl Ballantyne (CEO), Mohamed Moutadayne (CTO), and Chris Book (Board of Directors) founded LyricFind in 2000 while attending The University of Waterloo. While initially a consumer-facing lyric website, lyrics were removed due to licensing concerns in December 2000. Ballantyne, Moutadayne, and Book restarted the company in 2004 as a B2B aggregator of lyric rights. They started by aggregating all the rights and content for the use of lyrics online, and sublicensing those rights to music services, websites and mobile apps..[1][2].
In 2005, they signed their first deal with EMI Music Publishing (now a part of Sony/ATV), followed by The Harry Fox Agency (representing publishers) and all the major publishers soon followed.
In 2006, music executive Ted Cohen and Andrew Stess, then at All Music Guide, joined LyricFind’s Board of Directors. From there, LyricFind acquired its first major client, RealNetworks[3], and they gradually expanded their licensing partners
In January 2013, LyricFind acquired Gracenote’s lyric service and merged it with its own.
In the same year, tech investor Larry Marcus, managing director of WaldenVC, joined LyricFind as an advisor and invested personally in LyricFind advisor[4][5].
LyricFind also introduced a software that synchronized lyric delivery, with Deezer becoming an early adopter of the feature in late 2014, offering "sing-a-long" or "score" mode.
On May 1, 2014, LyricFind signed on to be the sole third party administrator for future lyrics licenses controlled by Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG)
Throughout 2013 and 2014, LyricFind worked with the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) and their anti piracy program to pursue websites that were illegally hosting lyrics, pressuring them legally to either change their business models or be shut down. "Through its anti-piracy program, NMPA has sent takedown notices to over 300 unlicensed lyrics sites and licensed over three dozen. LyricFind has been instrumental in helping infringing sites obtain licenses and continue operating", stated David Israelite, president of the NMPA, in May 2014.
By April 2015, LyricFind reached six languages supported in-house, and opened a new office in New York in May 2015. In August 2015, LyricFind expanded their operations into China with the digital music distribution company R2G acting as their regional agent. At the time, R2G was part of the China Music Corporation, which has since closed its doors[6][7][8].
In late 2015, LyricFind launched the LyricFind U.S. and LyricFind Global Charts in collaboration with Billboard[9][10]. Both charts use LyricFind's traffic data to rank the top trending lyric searches.
In 2016, the company partnered with The Recording Academy on a number of initiatives, including the licensing of lyric displays for the Grammy’s websites[11]
Products[edit]
Lyric Display[edit]
One of LyricFind’s core services is online Lyric Display, which is offered in static (displayed as a block of text), line-by-line (displayed in time with the music) and word-by-word (every word is synchronized with the music) formats.
Lyric Search[edit]
Lyric Search allows users to search through an extensive catalogue of lyrics, and find lyrics and music based on only a small segment of lyrics.[12]
LyricIQ[edit]
LyricIQ is a set of data analysis and filtering tools, designed to dive deeper into the lyrical content of songs and give businesses more control over their product offering. LyricFind’s technology bases the organization and analysis of songs solely on their lyrics. By identifying exactly what is being said in a song, LyricIQ categorizes song themes and topics - even if the sound of the song is contrary to its lyrical content[13][14]
With three main features (Emotion & Sentiment Analysis, Content Filters and Subject Matter Analysis), LyricIQ can be used in child-friendly services, voice search, playlisting, music discovery and language learning tools. It can also be utilized by various industries, including automotive, in-store, health & fitness, sync placements and catalogue management.
Lyric Videos[edit]
LyricFind’s latest solution is a platform that generates batches of lyric videos with custom backgrounds, fonts, animations and visualizers[15][16][17][18]
This product can be used by record labels and owners of large catalogues with the Full Serve option, through which LyricFind can create branded and dynamic lyric videos[19] by request.
In 2022, LyricFind introduced Self Serve Lyric Videos, which allows distributors and platforms to integrate the Lyric Video creation tool into their platform so users can create their own lyric videos.
LyricFind has created branded lyric videos for artists such as The Game, Pop Evil, Chromeo and Bryant Myers amongst others.
Lyric Translations[edit]
LyricFind offers human lyric translations for exhibition and monetization across partner platforms[20]. Thanks to their in-house team of bilingual professionals, the languages supported are Spanish, Italian, German, French, Portuguese, Japanese and Korean[21]. In 2022, the product was launched on Deezer, the first DSP to provide that.
In 2021, LyricFind launched Global Lyric Project, a community driven lyric translation platform where people around the world can translate song lyrics from English to Portuguese, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Japanese, Korean and vice versa.
Administration[edit]
LyricFind delivers quarterly royalty reports providing insight into publishing catalogues. The reports record all publisher and songwriter data and accreditation, copyright ownership data, split information, and territorial restrictions.
Clients[edit]
LyricFind services more than 100 platforms including ByteDance, Amazon, Google[22][23], Xperi[24][25][26], YouTube[27], Deezer[28], Mercedes, Pandora, and iHeartRadio.
Publishers[edit]
LyricFind has licensing from over 65,000 music publishers[29][30][31], including all the majors[32]: Universal Music Publishing Group, Sony-ATV, Warner/Chappell Music Publishing and Kobalt. LyricFind tracks, reports and pays royalties to those publishers on a song-by-song and territory-by-territory basis.
Administration[edit]
LyricFind properly credits writers and publishing companies for each song by displaying the lyrics with their accompanying metadata. LyricFind tracks lyric usage, reports, and pays royalties to rights holders for every view of their lyrics on the lyric services it powers.
