M. E. Mitchell

M. E. Mitchell (born 28 June 1934) is an Irish botanist and writer.

Mitchell was born in Galway and educated at St. Mary's College and University College, Galway, graduating with a BSc in 1956. In 1961, he obtained his doctorate at University of Rennes 1, from which time he was employed at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. In 1962, he was appointed lecturer with the Department of Botany at U.C.G. In 1976, he was Associate Professor of Botany. He studied Irish lichenology and contributed to the Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy, in addition to other journals. Including, "A somewhat esoteric pursuit": The course of lichenological inquiry from 1700 to 1950, in Huntia Vol.14 on pages 115-145 in 2011 and 'De Bary's legacy: The emergence of different perspectives on lichen symbiosis, Huntia, Vol. 15 in 2012.[1]
