MAXAM is a global technology company originally founded by Alfred Nobel in 1872. It specializes in the design, development, manufacture, and application of energetic materials. It has more than 6,500 employeees spead across 140 subsidiaries in more than 50 countries. MAXAM´s activities are based on technology related to energetic materials used in mining, infrastructure construction, defence and sport cartridges.

History

1872-1911

Following Alfred Nobel´s invention of dynamite, an entirely new industry developed as the Swedish chemist founded various dynamite companies in different countries based on his patents . In 1872, Nobel founded the Spanish Dynamite Manufacturing Company (Sociedad Española de la Dinamita) in Galdácano, near Bilbao, Spain. In 1896, Nobel´s company merged with other companies in the sector to create the Spanish Union of Explosives (UEE by its Spanish initials). During this time period, the predecessor of MAXAM grew quickly and began to diversify its operations. Also in 1896, it began production of sporting cartridges. It then entered the defence industry when it became a supplier of the Spanish Navy in 1911 .

1970-1997

During the second half of the 20th century, MAXAM underwent several structural changes. This included a temporary merger with the Rio Tinto Spanish Company of Mines . Subsequently in 1994, it reverted back to a seperate, independent company.

1998-2018

By 2001, MAXAM operated on five continents and the turn of the century marked a period of rapid transformation. To reflect this new globalism, the company´s name was changed from UEE to MAXAM in 2006. During this time period, MAXAM has been involved in multiple large-scale engineering projects worldwide, including the most recent expansion of the Panama Canal . As of 2018, MAXAM had grown to include 140 subsidiaries, with a presence in more than 50 countries.

Products & Services

Terra Solutions

Terra Solutions provides blasting solutions for mining, quarrying, infrastructure construction, seismic work, and special applications. It is the largest operator in its industry in Europe, and the second largest worldwide.

Outdoors

Since 1896, MAXAM Outdoors has produced sports ammunition and hunting powders. It currently manufactures all componnets related to cartridges including shell cases, primers, and powders.

Defence

MAXAM´s Defence Business Unit operates under the name EXPAL and offers various solutions for the defence industry, including demilitarization efforts.

Chem

Operations focus on raw materials used in the production of nitro chemicals: ammonium nitrate, nitrocellulose, and nitric acid.

MAXAM Foundation

In 1899, the MAXAM Art Collection was established. The following year, MAXAM began to commission a well-known artist to produce a piece of art that would be subsequently included in the calendar that was used to promote the company´s products. Works commmissioned for the calendar have included pieces by Spanish artists such as Cecilio Plá, Julio Romero de Torres, , Manolo Valdés and Eduardo Arroyo .

In 2006, the MAXAM Foundation was established, which focuses on cultural and educational progerams.In addition, MAXAM has collaborated with the Mining Museum of Asturias since 1997. The company helped with the establishment of the musuem´s Explosives House. .

Beyond the arts, MAXAM also promotes scientific research and higher education. Since 2002, the company has managed the MAXAM Chair of Explosive Technology at the Higher Technical School of Mining and Energy Engineers at the Technical University of Madrid.
