Over the years, the group diversified into areas including engineering, information technology and communications, property, mining, FMCG, health and hospitality.

Notable subsidiaries include MCS Coca-Cola (the official franchisee of the Coca-Cola Company), Unitel Group (telecommunications company), Energy Resources (Mongolian Mining Corporation), and Anungoo (official Mongolian distributor company of Procter and Gamble).

In August 2020, Cerberus, a Global Investment Firm, acquired approximately 20% indirect ownership or notes convertible into equity of certain MCS Group companies.[2]

History

1993-1997[3]

As the privatization process was ramping up in Mongolia - after the democratic revolution in 1990 - many private companies were established, one of which was the MCS company, founded by four young Mongolians in April 1993. One of them, Odjargal Jambaljamts, had the idea to set up a consultancy while working at Electrowatt in Zürich, Switzerland, in 1992.

In the first four years of its existence, MCS completed more than 20 project studies in the energy, agriculture, and environment sectors, funded by the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), United Nations, European Community and agricultural development organizations.

1998-2008

In 1997 MCS established Interpress, a printing company, while continuing to expand its import and sales of furniture, computers, and IT services.

By 1998, MCS entered a new stage of its business development by acquiring, through privatization, Spirt Bal Buram, an alcohol manufacturer, and invested to increase their capacity to produce and distribute consumer goods. Three years later, in 2001, MCS Group received exclusive authority to produce and sell Coca-Cola Company products in Mongolia. The MCS Coca-Cola Company was established, and began production in 2002.

2008-present[4]

Since 2008, the MCS Group has made strides in telecommunications, property development, engineering, infrastructure, mining and manufacturing. In 2009, MCS Group established the Ukhaa Khudag Industrial Complex, and listed the Mongolian Mining Corporation on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on October 13, 2010.[5] In 2014, the group set foot in the health sector, by commissioning the Intermed Hospital, which passed the JCI accreditation test and received the "Golden Seal" in 2016, becoming the first hospital in Mongolia to be recognized.

In 2015, the group also opened the Shangri-La Hotel and Resort in Ulaanbaatar. The Shangri-La Center, a complex containing a shopping mall, luxury residences, offices, entertainment and sport facilities, opened a year later.[6]
