Abdel-Rahman Al-Shantti (born September 14, 2008) known professionally as MC Abdul or MCA Abdul is a Palestinian rapper from Gaza, Palestine.[1] He is studying at a school affiliated with the UNRWA. He gained popularity when he sang a rap about freedom, in front of his school in Gaza among his friends, which garnered hundreds of thousands of views on social media.[2][3][4] Subsequently, as of June 2022, his videos for "Shouting At The Wall" and "Palestine" have received 297,000 views and 505,000 views, respectively, on YouTube alone.[5][6] However, his videos routinely draw hundreds of thousands of views or more on Instagram, where he is most active. As of June 2022, his "Palestine" freestyle has received more than 5 million views on Instagram,[7] and his songs have received
Early life
Abdel was born in Gaza, Palestine. He is the oldest among five siblings. Abdel Started rapping and writing songs at age nine. He began recording cover versions of his favorite tracks and sharing them with friends and online. His family exposed him to artists such as Eminem and fellow Palestinian DJ Khaled, the former of which Abdul considers to be one of his four favourites; the others are NF, Tupac (citing “Changes” and “Dear Mama"), and Jay-Z (citing his collaboration with Linkin Park). Another inspiration is Waheeb Nasan, a fellow Palestinian artist. He said he would like to go on Arab Idol like fellow Palestinian Mohammed Assaf.[8]
Career
In 2020, Abdul gained his first major surge in recognition. The rapper's music promoted love and unity while advocating on behalf of Palestinians. In 2021, that message intensified, as did the attacks from Israel, which continued to shatter Abdul's home and family.[9] While working on music with Ireland's GMCBeats, the explosions were literally hitting close to home.
Soon after, he caught the attention of the global record label Empire, which signs many big artists, including Iggy Azalea, following the release of his song.[10] As he was perfecting his free verse for "Palestine" on the rooftop of his building, bombs and missiles exploded. The bombardment lasted for almost one and a half minutes, all the while Abdul rapped verses about what his people are going through. "You wanna see the pain? Take a look at people's faces," he adds.[11]
