MSU-1 chip[edit]

The MSU-1 chip is a Super Nintendo enhancement chip created by Higan emulator creator byuu et al. MSU stands for "Media Streaming Unit 1". MSU-1 is a play on the GSU-1 "Graphics Support Unit 1" chip, a version of the Super FX chip.

Function[edit]

The MSU-1 chip is a Super Nintendo Entertainment System expansion chip that allows ROM files up to 4 gigabytes to be put into a Super Nintendo cartridge, and can also play CD-quality audio files over gameplay, freeing up extra audio channels for sound effects. The extra space on the cartridge can also be used for Full motion video and high quality pre-rendered images.
