The MSU-1 chip is a Super Nintendo enhancement chip created by Higan emulator creator byuu et al. MSU stands for "Media Streaming Unit 1". MSU-1 is a play on the GSU-1 "Graphics Support Unit 1" chip, a version of the Super FX chip.
Function
The MSU-1 chip is a Super Nintendo Entertainment System expansion chip that allows ROM files up to 4 gigabytes to be put into a Super Nintendo cartridge, and can also play CD-quality audio files over gameplay, freeing up extra audio channels for sound effects. The extra space on the cartridge can also be used for Full motion video and high-quality pre-rendered images.
