In 1990, the captain of the previous supply ship, Lance Knight rallied the locals of Lord Howe Island to purchase and operate their own shipping service. Lance set off around the world searching for a ship, during which in March 1991 he made the discovery of the surf breaks Lance's Right and Left in Indonesia which were named after him by Martin Daly, captain of the MV Indies Trader. Eventually he found the ship, then named Cape Trader and brought it to Lord Howe Island in March 1992.

It has served the island since and is the last 500gt, general goods vessel registered in New South Wales, Australia.[1]
