MV Steyning
MV Steyning was a coastal trading vessel built in 1955 as a collier for Stephenson Clarke Shipping Limited. In common with many of their ships, she was named after a place in Sussex. The ship was launched by her builders, Austin & Pickersgill Ltd of Wear Dock, Sunderland, on 6 January 1955. She had a length of 242 feet and a gross registered tonnage of 1637 tons. The vessel was powered by a 1200bhp Sulzer 2 S.C.S.A. engine driving a single screw.
On 12 July 1955, in thick fog, the Steyning collided with the French cargo vessel Mėdée in the Eastern entrance to the English Channel. Steyning rescued the French ship's crew before it sank.[1][2] In 1971 the ship was sold by them, along with the MV Ardingly, to John Kelly Ltd of Belfast who renamed her MV Ballywalter. The ship was further sold in 1979 to Oldham Bros Ltd and renamed MV Saltwater, then in 1980 passed to Delta Marine & Trading Company, Alexandria. At this time she was renamed again as Abeer Delta.[3]
During 1980 the vessel was used in the filming of the Steven Spielberg movie Raiders of the Lost Ark, where it portrayed the steam ship Bantu Wind. The ship is seen in the film with a false tall funnel and flying an Egyptian Flag, and is captained by the character Simon Katanga. The scenes at sea were filmed off La Rochelle, France.[4] The ship was believed to have been scrapped sometime prior to 1992 when her registration was deleted.[3]
