Mac Burrus (born February 18) is an American musician and producer from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and a member of the pop rock band Self. Prior to joining Self, Burrus was a member of the alternative rock band The Plain, and a short lived member of the bands Fluid Ounces and The Katies. Burrus is currently a producer for the Jimmy Kimmel Live! crew, and a member of the rock band Telefone.
Early career
In the early 1990s, Burrus and his brother, Swan, founded the alternative rock band "The Southern Delta Swans", motivated by their mutual enthusiasm for blues-influenced musicians such as The Black Crowes, The Allman Brothers, and Led Zeppelin. Swan Burrus (rhythm guitar, vocals), Mac Burrus (lead guitar), and Justin Meyer (drums) had performed extensively in Nashville, playing at various venues including dive bars, pizzerias, talent shows, proms, masonic lodges, parks, and house parties.[2] After Rob Overbey joined the band as a bassist, they rebranded themselves as "The Plain", solidifying their sound which fused elements of southern rock, blues, power pop, and classic rock. In 1995, with Swan, Justin, and Mac all attending Middle Tennessee State University, the band began to perform relentlessly in Murfreesboro and Nashville, gaining recognition as one of the loudest and most energetic bands in the region.[3] By 1997, after various lineup changes, the band had broken up. Meyer went on to play with Fluid Ounces, and Overbey leaving for California. Swan Burrus continued to play in various bands before eventually leaving Murfreesboro as well, and recorded a solo album called "Swan Songs" in 2003.
In early 1996, Burrus joined The Katies, playing guitar for the band. After band members Seth Timbs and Sam Baker left to create the band Fluid Ounces later that year, Burrus moved to playing a Rhodes piano. Burrus additionally performed with Timbs in live performances for Fluid Ounces.[4] Burrus eventually left both bands in 1998 after auditioning for Horns in Matt Mahaffey’s band Self.[5]
Career
Self
Burrus joined the band Self in early 1998. After increasing difficulty working with then-bassist Tim Nobles, lead member Matt Mahaffey removed Nobles from the group. Mahaffey then proceeded to create the studio album The Half-Baked Serenade (1997) solely in his living room.[6] After its completion, Mahaffey opened auditions for a horn section in the band, with Burrus auditioning for the role. After Burrus mentioned he could play the bass guitar “really good”, he was added into the band as Nobles' replacement.[5] TBA
Jimmy Kimmel Live! and solo projects
Burrus has been a member of the Jimmy Kimmel Live! staff team since 2003, beginning as a back-line technician.[7] Since 2017, he has co-run music procution with former Conan producer Jim Pitt.[8][9] Burrus additionally books artists for Kimmel,[10] such as Knocked Loose,[11] Juice Wrld,[12] and Pusha T.[13]
Burrus has played in a cover band named "Montessori Dads" since 2014,[14] and is a member of the indie rock "Telefone".[15][16]
