Mac Stewart is a twenty-two-year old Los Angeles-based contemporary artist.[1]. He creates large-scale and small-scale canvas paintings, large-scale installations, and sculptures. Stewart is best-known for his murals; three of his most recent murals will be featured on Season14 of popular television series “The Voice”. His paintings have also earned a place in multiple art galleries, exhibitions and museums; two of his works on paper are included within the permanent collection of the renowned High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia [2]

Stewart’s art is primarily black and white, although many of his works feature a single flat color as well. His paintings usually include a blend of bold lines, intricate patterns, and geometric shapes [3]. Notable influences on Stewart’s art include Keith Haring, Picasso, Jean-Michael Basquiat, Banksy and Shepherd Fairey [4]. Stewart produces all of his art by hand.

Stewart was born in Tennessee and raised in Atlanta, Georgia alongside his brother and sister. He also lived in San Diego, California for a short period of his youth. As a child, Stewart spent much of his time in nature exploring the trails and forests nearby his Atlanta home [1]. This early immersion in the outdoors sparked a deep love for nature that eventually became a heavy influence in his art.

Stewart’s art career began in his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. Many of his early paintings were featured in exhibitions in Atlanta and its surrounding cities. Stewart also completed his first mural on a public wall in Atlanta. In June 2016, he made the decision to move to Los Angeles, California, where he currently resides.[3]

Career[edit]

Stewart launched his career as a professional artist in 2012, less than a year after he started painting. His work was chosen to be a part of The Hudgens Juried Member’s Exhibition, the annual art exhibition led by the Hudgens Center for the Arts in Duluth, Georgia.[5]In 2013, Stewart’s work was displayed at Blue Mark Studio, a renovated church in Atlanta, Georgia that showcases the work of local artists. His work was also acquired by NovoLogic—a company that offers culture shaping services to other companies—in September 2013 as a permanent installation in their Lawrenceville, Georgia facility.

In 2014, Stewart shifted his focus from canvas paintings to public art pieces. He was invited to the 2014 Living Walls Conference—an annual conference run by Living Walls, a non-profit organization that facilitates the creation of thought-provoking public art in Atlanta, Georgia—and was chosen by Living Walls to produce a giant mural on a 100’ x 20’ wall in Atlanta.[6] Stewart’s Living Walls piece was not the only mural he produced in 2014. He also contributed a mural to Wynwood Walls—a destination in Miami, Florida where global artists create large street murals—and the Phoenix Festival of the Arts in Atlanta, Georgia.

In addition to his murals, Stewart immersed himself in set design in 2014. During this year, he contributed five large-scale paintings to be used as backdrops for Gwinnett Ballet Theatre [7] and produced thirteen paintings to be used in set design for cable network Adult Swim’s television series Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell. Stewart has continued working with Gwinnett Ballet Theatre and painted backdrops for the set of their production “19-20-21” in 2016.

Stewart produced multiple murals and participated in various art exhibitions throughout 2015. He contributed a second mural to Wynwood’s Art District in Miami, Florida and participated in Salem Middle School Mural Project in Lithonia, Georgia.[8] During 2015, Stewart’s work appeared in two Atlanta art galleries: Metro Gallery and Pecola Gallery.

His work was also included in Atlanta’s High Museum of Art group show “Sprawl: Drawing Outside the Lines” from July 18 to October 4, 2015. After Stewart’s art was featured in the High Museum of Art, the museum chose to acquire two of his drawings as additions to their permanent collection. He is the youngest living artist to be purchased by the museum.[9] [10] [11]

While his work was featured in multiple exhibitions between 2012 and 2015, Stewart held his first solo art exhibition in 2016. This exhibition was titled “Midnight Garden” and was held at the Mason-Scharfenstein Museum of Art at Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia. “Midnight Garden” consisted of eight black-and-white paintings and three sculptures, the first he made. The show ran from May 20 to August 26, 2016.[12] Stewart also contributed his work to the creation of Color ATL: The Atlanta-Based Adult Coloring Book, which was released in October of 2016 and features artwork from multiple artists local to Atlanta, Georgia.

Stewart created murals for multiple notable corporations in 2017. He painted a mural for Facebook’s office in Los Angeles, California in June 2017. In July 2017, he contributed a mural to the corporate headquarters of Saban Brands in Los Angeles, California. Returning to his roots in Georgia, Stewart also painted a mural for the corporate headquarters of computer hardware company NCR in Atlanta.

Throughout his young career, Mac Stewart has earned recognition for his numerous artistic accomplishments at such a young age. He was the youngest artist ever assigned a mural to paint for Living Walls and the youngest artist to have their work added to the permanent collection of Atlanta’s High Museum of Art.[9] In addition to his public and featured works, he creates commissioned pieces for private collectors.[2]
