"Mac and Charlie Die (Part 1 &2)" is the fifth and sixth episodes of Season 4 of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The two-part episode is written by Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton, and directed by Fred Savage and Matt Shakman.[1][2] In the episode, Mac's father is released from prison, leading Mac and Charlie to fake their deaths to avoid Luther's wrath.

Plot[edit]

Part 1[edit]

After Mac and Charlie unsuccessfully used false testimony against him at his parole hearing, Mac's father Luther is released from prison on parole. Fearing that Luther will seek out revenge on them for getting him arrested previously, Mac and Charlie conclude that the only way to avoid Luther from finding them is to fake their own deaths. They stole Dee's car and crashes it into a wall to stage a suicide, although Mac's severely injured after he failed to jump out of the car at the last moment. They use Dee's credit card to purchase a hand grenade, a handgun, and some poppers for Mac, the grenade and the gun to blow up the car. Despite the car not catching fire, Mac and Charlie decide that it is enough and flees into hiding.

Meanwhile, a glory hole is discovered by Dennis, Dee, and Frank in the bathroom stall at Paddy's Pub. Dennis is intrigued by the prospects of experiencing anonymous sex, so Frank takes him to an orgy, which left Dennis unimpressed. The next day, as Frank and Dennis discuss the nature of the glory hole with the addition of an eyepiece Dennis customized, Dee walks in and tells them that Mac and Charlie are apparently dead. They watch a 'suicide tape' found at the scene and argues over the will left with the tape as Mac and Charlie hides out on the rooftop of the pub.

Part 2[edit]

A funeral is held at Paddy's for Mac and Charlie, with only their respective mothers and the Reynolds present. Dennis's supposed eulogy ended up being an argument with Frank about whether or not to burn Mac's duster. After the ceremony, Dennis enthusiastically begins a search for a new roommate, while Frank courts Charlie's mother, Bonnie. With her car wrecked by Mac and Charlie, Dee is forced to take the bus home. On her commute, she sees Mac and Charlie fighting with each other on the side of the street, leading her to confront them later on the rooftop of Paddy's. Mac reveals to Dee that his father has been paroled and that she will have to fake her own death as well to avoid Luther.

Meanwhile, Dennis finds a new roommate in Jan, a mysterious European man who brings two German girls to party with Dennis. Dee visits Dennis to tell her that she's going for a jog in the park, but is largely ignored by Dennis. Mac and Charlie look in from outside, and Mac becomes jealous at Dennis having fun without him. They later scout out Frank, finding out that he now has a Mannequin to replace Charlie to cope with his grief.

Returning to Paddy's, Mac and Dennis began to contemplate of coming out of faking their deaths, Dee joins them, but they soon retrieve to the back office as Dennis, Jan, and Frank enters with a group of girls in their underwears. Mac decides that they will scare Dennis and Frank out of anger at Dennis having fun without him. Jan approaches Dennis, telling him he has arranged for him to use the glory hole. Dennis enters the stall, and inserts his penis in the hole, only to find Frank on the other side. In response, Dennis kicks Jan and the girls out, sickened at Jan's arrangement. Mac, Charlie, and Dee then storm out of the office with sparklers in their hands claiming they are ghosts. But Dennis reveals to them that he knew they weren't dead as he could see and hear them from the rooftop of the bar, and was only getting a new roommate to piss Mac off. Charlie then expresses concern that Luther could still be out to get them, but Frank reads a letter left by Luther. Who has fled to Tijuana and urges Mac to stay away from him.
