The Maccan family, also known as Maccani, is a noble Italian family that originated from Ireland, and later branched out to Italy. [1]
Etymology
The name Maccan is said to have two origins. The first one is from the word Mac Cana meaning "son of Cana". This literally means "wolf cub", and is claimed to be a term for a young warrior.[2] The second one from Maccus, King of the Isles, which means “Son of the Dog”, in fact ‘can’ and ‘cani’ in Italian means Dog/Dogs. History
According to Irish tradition the Maccan were a Gaelic clan who held lands in Clancann and Clanbrasil in what is now northern County Armagh, the title of 'Lords of Clanbrasil'. [5] [6] [7]
Around the 1500, a branch of the family moved to Italy. [3] Here they were known as Maccan and Maccani, and in the first half of the 17th century, from Nobles of Trento they became Counts of Tres by concession of Carlo Emanuele Madruzzo [8] and subsequently Marquis by concession of Ferdinand Charles, Archduke of Austria. [9] [10] The first document attesting the presence of a Maccan as Vicar General is dated in the 1600s with Count Luca Maccan of Cles (Vicar general of Prince Bishop Carlo Madruzzo and of the Diocese of Trentino), while as a notary it is from 1652 with Giovanni Maccan of Tres.[11][12]
