Maciej Zaborowski (born February 10, 1984 in Warsaw, Poland), Polish legal expert, lawyer and social activist. Since 2018 sitting justice of the Supreme State Tribunal.

Life and Career Zaborowski graduated from the Joachim Lelewel High School in Warsaw. He obtained his law degree at the Warsaw University’s Law School. He also graduated from Harvard Law School (ALP) as well as postgraduate studies at his Alma Mater, majoring in the intellectual property law. In addition to that, he completed his postgraduate studies in rules of evidence laws at the Cardinal Wyszyński University in Warsaw.

From 2009 to 2012 he had his legal internship in Warsaw Bar Association under the mentorship of Piotr Kruszyński which he concluded by passing his bar exam. He is also a graduate of the Center for American Law Studies (a joint project of the State University of Florida and University of Warsaw Law School), Leadership Academy for Poland conducted by the faculty of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, the XVI School for Leadership for the Civil Society established by Zbigniew Pełczyński, as well as the Academy of the Young Diplomats (the European Academy of Diplomacy), majoring in the foreign service.

From 2005 to 2007 he worked in the Ministry of Justice. Then, he was appointed to work in the Polish Embassy in Rome, where he was coordinating all activities related to the Polish national elections in Italy. In the years 2008 through 2010 he worked in Sejm, the Polish Parliament, where he co-authored a report produced by the parliamentary special commission that investigated the legislative process that led to the amended law regulating gambling including electronic and mechanical gambling machines. This special commission was shortly called the Gambling Commission. Maciej Zaborowski was also the author of numerous legal opinions related to the legislative process including opinions requested by the office of the Prime Minister of Poland.

Since 2013 he has been a mediator at the Mediation Center of the National Bar Association and was entered on the register of mediators of the Warsaw District Court. In the same year he established his own law office. Since 2015 he has been the Managing Partner at the partnership law firm, Kopeć Zaborowski Adwokaci i Radcowie Prawni Spółka Partnerska, which British magazine “The Lawyer” nominated for the Law Firm of the Year: Poland in the 2018 Lawyer European Awards.

In his law practice he deals mostly with criminal cases, and in civil law he gets involved mostly in cases involving personal property, media regulations and so called Swiss-Franc-affairs, i.e. suits against banks that allegedly unfairly jacked up interest rates to the customers who got loans in Swiss Francs. He is also a lecturer for the interns working at the Warsaw Bar Association.

As a defense lawyer, he was involved in several well-publicized trials. He represented, in several trials, the Minister of Justice, Zbigniew Ziobro, the deputies to the Sejm, Przemysław Wipler and Patryk Jaki, the journalists, Cezary Gmyz, Dorota Kania and Anita Gargas. He also represented the known historian Jerzy Targalski, the deputy to the European Parliament, Janusz Korwin-Mikke, musicians, Tomasz Bielski and Zbigniew Kucharski as well as the mother of murdered harp player in the double homicide case in the Wrocław Dolnośląska Philharmonic. He also participated in both criminal and civil cases where the defendants were former Minister of Justice Zbigniew Ćwiąkalski, former Prime Minister Leszek Miller, movie director Kazimierz Kutz, journalist Tomasz Lis, businessman Jan Kulczyk, Deputy to Sejm Janusz Palikot, private investigator Krzysztof Rutkowski and the former president of the national insurance company, PZU, Jaromir Netzel.

He also joined Ministry of Justice of Poland as an expert working on necessary changes in Poland’s Penal Code and its procedural parts, among others those parts that dealt with forfeiture of property, criminal liabilities of forensic experts, child support failure, and criminal liabilities of collective entities.

Zaborowski was the chairman of the board (2006-2012) and the President (since 2012) of the Founding Fathers of the Civil Responsibility Foundation, which won 1st place in the contest Pro Publico Bono, in the category: The Culture and National Heritage for their campaign “The Young People Remember.”

In March of 2011 he was presented with a special award given by the Board of Directors of the Warsaw District Bar Association for his social activism. He got also top award in the contest, Rising Stars – Lawyers as Leaders of Tomorrow 2015 organized by the “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna” [Law Daily] as well as the publishing house Wolters Kluwer and sponsored jointly by the President of National Bar Association and the President of the National Legal Advisors Chamber.

In December 2015 he was selected to be a member of the Board of Directors of the Polish National Railways, the speed trains division, PKP Intercity, where he worked as the vice-president of the board. In January 2016 he was invited to join the board of directors of the National Insurance Company, PZU, where he works as the Board’s Secretary.

On the 28th of February 2018 he was elected by the Parliament, Sejm, to join the Supreme State Tribunal as a justice to replace the deceased Prof. Bogusław Banaszak.
