Madan Lal Gupta

Madan Lal Gupta (05 April 1954) is an established Indian sculptor, conceptually working in the panorama of Indian Contemporary Sculpture. He is more known by his short name Madan Lal.

Life[edit]

Madan lal, (1954- ), was born, in lower-class shop- keeper family in Lalganj Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. His childhood and adolescent years spent in country side. His association and unique affinity with nature, his observant soul's continuous interactions with natural elements has made impression on him. His acquaintance with the aroma and beauty of trees and other plants; regular roaming around the village fields, ponds and lakes; these experiences and reminiscences and other festivities imprinted vividly in his sub-conscious. In class Xth with Wordsworth’s poem ‘Daffodils’, opened a new world before the sculptor's eye; the wondering eyes of young artist found a new a world of literature and fine arts. In his early life his teachers noticed the young child's creative restlessness and advised to study Visual-Arts at Banaras Hindu University. His primary mentor, sculptor Ram Chhatpar motivated and guided, to expand his creative interest beyond sculpture to other artistic disciplines, such as painting, music and literature. In 1976, Met eminent sculptor Sankho Chaudhuri; was immediately captivated by his oeuvre and aura; Madan lal profoundly influenced by Sankho Chaudhuri in his professional and academic career of sculpture; founded Ram Chhatpar Shilp Nyas India. In 1978, the great Indian modern sculptor Ram Kinkar Baij inaugurated his fifth one-man show in Nandan-Santiniketan. He is professor of sculpture in Benares Hindu University.

1985: The first commission to create a 2-meter long Marble-Sculpture for the Indian Petrochemical Company Limited Baroda which is installed at the campus.
1988: Commission Marble-work for Grand Hilton International Hotel, Tokyo.
1988: Commission award for 210 Cm. for stone sculpture at Kawasaki Sculpture Park Museum, Japan.
1997: Executed 2 set of Marble Sculptures by Art Front Gallery, Tokyo for public place in Japan.
2000: Invited to install ‘Peace-Garden’ (60 pieces) at the First Echigo Tsumari Art Triennial, Japan, organized and sponsored by Art Front Gallery, Tokyo and Government Bodies of Japan, the world’s largest Open-Air Art Exhibition.
2000: The ‘Anand-Sarovar Project, 520 square feet high-relief, sand-stone-sculpture on wall space of house cum-studio at 13, Koslesh Nagar, Sunderpur, Varanasi, India.
2003: Commissioned by Art Front Gallery, Tokyo, a 220 Cm. tall Marble Sculpture in 3 pieces for private Design House in Tokyo.
