Madeleine Hetherton-Miau

Madeleine Hetherton-Miau is a film and television director and producer.[1][2][3] In 2012, she co-founded the independent production company Media Stockade with Rebecca Barry.[4][5][6] Her credits include series producer and creator of the 8-part series The Surgery Ship for National Geographic Channel,[7][8] producer for the true crime series Debi Marshall Investigates for Foxtel [9] and producer for Back to Nature factual series for the ABC.[10]

Madeleine works to date include a wide range of programs, which have been broadcast in over 60 countries across networks including ABC,[11][12] Netflix,[13] Al Jazeera,[14] SBS[15] and National Geographic.[16]

Madeleine Hetherton-Miau also lectured at the Australian Film Television and Radio school between 2012-2019.[17]

Photography[edit]

In addition to documentary cinematography, Madeleine is a photographer with an irregular exhibition history. In 2017 her collection of photographs for "The Surgery Ship" (2013) exhibited at the HeadOn Photo Festival.[18] In 2014 she collaborated with filmmaker Shabnam Hameed on a photo series "Home Run" featuring the life of the drivers of long-haul trucks.[19][20]

Madeleine Hetherton-Miau is a member of Heartfelt Photography, a group of professional photographers who voluntarily give photo sessions to families of critically sick children or stillborn babies. Heartfelt organisation was established by Gavin Blue OAM a Victorian based photographer whose daughter Alexandra was stillborn.

Early Career[edit]

Madeleine Hetherton-Miau initially studied architecture at the University of Sydney graduating with Honours 1.[21] She worked professionally for a number of years within the practices of Peter Stutchbury,[22] Walter Barda[23] and Shelly Indyk.[24]

Madeleine later studied a Masters of Film at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School majoring in Documentary Directing.[25][26]

Awards[edit]

Madeleine was awarded the June Andrews Award for Women’s Leadership in Media 2020[27] for "Power Meri" (2018).[28]

Her film "The Surgery Ship" (2013) won Best Documentary Feature (Audience Award) at the 2015 Sarasota Film Festival,[29] Best Human Interest Documentary at the 2017 Association for International Broadcasters (AIB)[30] and Best Direction in a Series at the 2018 ADG awards.[31]
