Madeleine Holland was a South African born poet and academic. She was born Madeleine Eliza Emily Orpen on the 22nd of November 1874 in Barkly East, Eastern Cape, South Africa and died on the 24nd of August 1922 at 47 years old.[1]

Family Life[edit]

Madeline Holland was born to Joseph Millard Orpen (1828-1932)[2] and Elise Pauline Rolland (1839-1915).[3] Her maternal ancestry is largely unknown[3] however her paternal ancestry stems from Dublin, Ireland.[2]

She married Arthur Herbert Holland in South Africa on the 22nd of January 1901,[4] becoming Madeleine Eliza Emily Holland. Her Husband Arthur was the personal Secretary to Cecil Rhodes.[5]

Her grandson, Andre Holland, went on to become a politician in the Rhodesian Front under Ian Smith's Administration in 1970 before starting his own democratic political party in Zimbabwe around 1981.[6]

Career[edit]

Madeleine studied at Oxford University, England in 1915, doing a BSc on the Bantu people.[7]

Following her death, her book, "Collected Poems of Madeleine Holland" was published in 1923 under the genre of English Poetry.[8]
