Madeline Eve Sands (born in 1989) is an Australian technology entrepreneur,[1] who developed the Breastfeeding Support Project[2] in 2014 and was featured on the Today Show in Australia twice.[3][4][5]
Early life and education
Born in Melbourne, Australia, Madeline attended Star of the Sea College in the suburb of Gardenvale.[citation needed] She received a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Fine Art in 2011 at the Ballarat campus of the Australian Catholic University in Victoria. In 2010, she undertook an exchange study program at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin USA.[citation needed]
Career
Madeline’s career focus has been in context awareness computing,[6] working at the intersection of mathematics and responsive web design. In 2012, she designed and built an interactive display for the Phillip Island Nature Park. It visually displayed and tracked the daily migratory habits of the Island’s little penguin.[7]
This project, viewed by millions of school children from around the world, visualized the GPS tracking data of the penguins’ daily food gathering routines. It also mapped the vast distances they swim in the Great Southern Ocean, off the Southern coast of Australia.[8] In June 2013, Madeline worked on the team that developed a patented system for converting text to video in wearable devices.[9]
In November 2013, Madeline began working on what would become the world’s first program for breastfeeding support,[10] using the wearable computing device Google Glass.[11][12]
As the Head of Data Visualization and Media Spokesperson[13] at Australian innovation company Small World Social, she divides her time between Silicon Valley, California and Melbourne, Australia.
Recognition
In May 2014, Small World Social and the Australian Breastfeeding Association won the Gold Questar Award in the Emerging Media: App section, for the Breastfeeding with Google Glass App.[14]
Small World Social were awarded the Silver Medal[15] at the 2014 World Media Festival in Hamburg, Germany for the Genentech Learning Portal App.[16]
In March 2014 in New York, her team was awarded a Gold Astrid Award for their Learning Portal App.[17]
Sands has been invited to present on technology innovation trends to executives, business leaders[18] and comment in the media.[19]
