The Maghan people are a Guan people who have been influenced by Gonja, Dagbon, Asante, Mande and Anlo people. With the fall of the Ghana Empire (c. 1235) at the Battle of Kirina, the Manden Maghan clan of Diarra moved south to first found Zogu near Sikasso in 1270 and later moved further South to the Sissili river, Begho, Sampa, Chira and finally established Eteneabankesieso in 1326 in the region between Afram plains and Adigya (now known as the Digya National Park) until the Ngbanye warriors led by Ndewura Jakpa of Gonja and other Akan states conquered the area between 1693 and 1697. The Maghan kingdom was originally divided into six clans namely the Ayuuma, Bande, Naraba and Ajakeme with Eteneabankesieso as its royal capital overseen by the male children of Jalal Magan Bore the son of Jalal Magan Djathal.

Under the leadership of Jalal Magan Bore the Otuoboyiri dynasty of Maghan was founded. The capital was established at Eteneabankesieso.

The Otuoboyiri clan expanded rapidly after its conquest, settling in the Asante-Akyem enclave, Anlo and northern Ghana where it d began a profitable gold trade with the Asantes, Danish settlements at Keta and British in the Fanti confederacy. By 1800, the five Maghan clans re-established hereditary succession of the Maghan clans to the Zugraan of Dendera (the a paramount stool of the Maghan) with the Alaara of Maghan being the supreme ruler and spiritual leader of the Maghan representing the spirit and unity of the Maghan people. The Otuoboyiri dynasty has controlled Maghan from its founding to the present day, with only two brief interregnums.

The current head of the Alaara of Maghan and Atse of the Otuoboyiri Dynasty, Jalal Magan Exoedoramewo Busumuru II has held his position since 5 November 2003. The Queenmother of Maghan since 2003 has also been Kassinma Ayaba Mary Ligi.
