The Magnolia Train Station is the current residence of the Magnolia Historical Society in Magnolia, New Jersey, New Jersey. This building is a reconstructed version of the original structure, which functioned from the late 1800s through the mid-1900s.
Original Train Station
Train service began in Magnolia in 1877[1], prior to the town being officially incorporated. The original line was a narrow-gauge line[2]. In 1882, Reading Railroad purchased the line and rebuilt it as a regular-gauge line[2].
In 1888, the town adopted the name of Magnolia after the name of the rail station[3]. The original station was built in 1890[4]. In 1903, trolley tracks were laid parallel to the railroad tracks[4]. The trolley line was abandoned in 1937 and replaced by a trackless trolley[2]. The last steam engine ran through Magnolia in 1968[4].
Reconstruction
The current station was rebuilt from 1999–2000, and used funds from a $300,000 state grant and private donations. [1] The search for funding and the project began in 1995[5]. On October 21st, 2000, the reconstructed train station held a grand opening. In the fall of 2001, the Train Station Park was dedicated[5].
Magnolia Historical Society
The Magnolia Historical Society was chartered in 1991[5], and founded by Helen Bradley. The Society meets on the first Monday of every month, at 7:30 p.m. in the Borough Hall.
