''Mailman'' is a song by American rock band The Jesus Lizard. It is the 5th track on their 5th album, Shot, released in April 1996. It was released as a promo single the same year.

Recording[edit]

While recording their previous album Down, dissents arose between the band and their producer at the time, Steve Albini, so the band decided they were going to use another producer on their next record before they decided to leave Touch and Go Records and sign with Capitol Records. Impressed by GGGarth's work with Melvins, the band hired him to produce Shot. ''Mailman'' was recorded by GGGarth in the studio in Fall of 1995. It was later mixed by Joe Barresi and mastered by Howie Weinberg at Masterdisk in New York City. It was engineered by GGGarth, along with Jeff Lane.

Composition and lyrics[edit]

Music[edit]

''Mailman'' was recorded in the key of C Major, with Duane Denison's guitar in Standard tuning. The song starts with Duane down strumming a palm muted F# chord on his guitar 32 times followed by a simple drum pattern played by Mac McNeilly and an ominous bass riff played by David Wm. Sims starting simultaneously and lastly followed by David Yow's somewhat gentle vocals shortly after that. At approximately 40 seconds into the song, the chorus begins with a distorted guitar which is now no longer palm muted, the drums becoming instantly potent, and David Yow yelling the lyrics, before returning to the verse at least 10 seconds later. The same repeats one more time and then there is an interlude with David Yow moaning and Duane playing previously unused chords afterwards, the drums still being vigorously bashed. During the third and final verse, unlike before, David Yow yells the same lyrics from the first verse. Duane plays choppy palm muting shortly before the chorus, also unlike before. The song ends with the guitar and bass guitar fading away.

Lyrics[edit]

''Mailman'' is about a perverted stalker sending a woman repulsive "love letters" through the mail.[1] David Yow sings from the perspective of the woman. The contents of the lyrics combined with the strange melody and overall instrumental makes for a rather sinister song, something the band were previously well known for doing in their music.[2]
