Maison Du Repos
La Maison Du Repos is a restored typical French Canadian style house in Saint-Joseph-du-Lac, Quebec.
History and restoration
The house was built in 1832 by Thomas Gemme and sold in 1854 at auction, after the death of his wife. Afterwards, the house was abandoned until its current owner decided to buy it and restore it.[1] The house was moved to a new location and restored piece by piece using a combination of modern techniques and ancient tools.[2] During the restoration work, it turned out that the house had previously had a summer kitchen, which was also added later. The property was completed with a barn that was turned into an atélier and a small additional house.
Awards and acknowledgements
The owner has been awarded several prizes for his restoration work and efforts in maintaining the building heritage of Québec.[3] He travels around Québec giving conferences on restoration of ancient houses.
