Products[edit]

Maison de Choup originally started with T-Shirts and has since branched out into hoodies, sweatshirts, shirts and tote bags.

The company is partnered with YoungMinds Charity and donates 25% of proceeds from certain collections to them.[2]

History[edit]

Conceived in the spring of 2014, Maison de Choup was started by George David Hodgson. The idea of Maison de Choup came whilst suffering from his severe anxiety and OCD which nearly ruined his young life. [3] Using his artwork and thoughts from notebooks he used to draw in, he decided to print them onto T-Shirts to spread awareness about mental health and the devastating effect it can have on young people.

He went to the NHS to see CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) but was told he would have to wait 40 weeks until getting help, 2 years later he got a call from CAMHS saying they could help. [4] He was fortunate enough that his parents could send him privately for mental health care.

Initially printing the T-Shirts himself on a screen-printing kit he bought, which went wrong, he looked elsewhere for expertise in screen-printing eventually landing on a company in London.

When starting Maison de Choup, George wanted to spread awareness for young peoples mental health and in 2014 he approached YoungMinds Charity to see if they would be interested in partnering with the brand whereupon he offered to donate 25% of proceeds from certain collections to them.

The Maison de Choup website officially launched in August 2015.

The Name[edit]

According to an article on the website, 'Choup' doesn't actually mean anything in French, other than 'Maison de' meaning 'House of', Choup has no translation.[5]

Spanning back to when he was suffering from his mental health problems, George's sister Charlotte helped him through some of the darkest days and is always there for him. His nickname for her when he was younger was Choup.

The name Maison de 'Choup' is based on her nickname, House of Charlotte.[6]

Awards[edit]

In November 2016 Maison de Choup won the British Fashion Startup Award due to his inspiring story behind the brand.[7]

Publications[edit]

Maison de Choup has appeared in publications including Vanity Fair, which referred to the brand as 'The Fashion Brand with a Mental Health Cause at its Heart'. Ever since then this has been the company's motto.[8]

In February 2016, The Telegraph did an open interview on how George conquered his severe mental illness and how the drug MDMA had such a devastating affect on his life.[9]
