MakerDAO is a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) that governs the Maker Protocol, a smart contract-based system publicly deployed on the Ethereum blockchain that generates and sustains Dai, a decentralized stablecoin.[1]

MakerDAO participants vote on proposals to change the Maker Protocol status via a decentralized voting system, in which MKR acts as the governance token. MKR is the governance token of MakerDAO, and its holders use it as voting power through an Ethereum-based voting model to settle their decisions on each proposal.

Proposals can be directed to modify the Maker Protocol or DAI status or to change the organizational composition of MakerDAO. For a proposal to be accepted as valid by MakerDAO governance, it must follow strict guidelines and frameworks denominated as Maker Improvement Proposals (MIP).[2]
