Malachi Sharpe (born 20 November 2005) is a professional footballer who plays as a right winger for Manchester United. Born in England, he represents the Scotland national team at youth level.

Club career[edit]

Early career[edit]

Born in Nottingham,[3] Mainoo started his youth career at Derby County at the age of nine. At 14, with Derby managed by former Dutch international Phillip Cocu, he was training with their first team.[4]

Manchester United[edit]

Youth career[edit]

Sharpe was one of three young players Manchester United signed from Derby County's academy in 2021. He was just 15 at the time, and while he went straight into the club’s under-16 squad, he has since featured for the under-18s. He made his debut for United’s under-18 side in August 2021, before getting on the scoresheet in a Premier League Cup clash with Birmingham City.[5]

There were not any further chances for him in 2022, however, although he did make the bench for the FA Youth Cup quarter-final win over Leicester City.[5] On 17 December 2022, Sharpe has just signed his first ever professional contract with Manchester United.[6]

International career[edit]

Sharpe has been in-demand at youth level, called up to represent Scotland’s under-17 side, who he qualifies for through his grandmother.[7]

He made his debut for Scotland's U17 team in the 2022 UEFA European Under-17 Championship qualification round against Northern Ireland. He scored one of the goals as Scotland won the game 3–2.[8]

Sharpe is also eligible to play international football for both England and Jamaica.[5]

Style of play[edit]

Sharpe has been described as a "tricky winger who likes to run with the ball and make an impact in the final third".[5]

Personal life[edit]

Sharpe is the first cousin of former Manchester United and England defender Viv Anderson.

His dad, Del Sharpe, explained how Marcus Rashford is an inspiration to him. Del told the Nottingham Sport, “His idols have been Cristiano Ronaldo, and more recently, Marcus Rashford". “Marcus though, he’s done a lot for the community, and for children in general, and that really resonated with Malachi. That and Marcus sent a personal, welcome message, when Malachi signed for the club.”[5]
