Malaysian University Sports Council abbreviated as MASUM, (Malay: Majlis Sukan Universiti Malaysia) is a university sports federation based in Malaysia established in 1974. It is recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education (Malaysia) and member of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The university sports body is the only body recognized for university sports in Malaysia by FISU. MASUM is also a member of the Asian University Sports Federation.[1]
History[edit]
The moments of the establishment of MASUM began in 1974 on the initiative of university sports officials at that time to hold sports competitions among local university staff. The competition is a catalyst for the development of sports among local universities. In (1975) the organization of sports among university students began to be held until now. In 1981, Gabungan Universiti Malaysia (GUM) was established as a result of the initiative of the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Student Affairs, Public Institutions of Higher Learning (IPTA) at that time. Prior to the establishment of GUM, all sports activities in IPTAs were conducted on an ‘ad-hoc’ basis among IPTAs. The name GUM was changed to the University Sports Council and the Institute of Higher Learning Malaysia (MASUIPTIM) in 1983. In 1985, the name MASUIPTIM was officially changed and renamed the University Sports Council of Malaysia (MASUM).[2]
