Emergency landing
Malcolm Waters is the captain of this flight. On 13 April 2010, the crew found “ENG 2 stall” on the Electronic flight instrument system or EFIS or ECAM.
The crew contacted the airline engineering department's Maintenance Control (MC) and discussed the fluctuations. As other engine operating parameters on both engines were normal, the flight crew and MC decided it was safe for the flight to continue.
They also found the “ENG 1 stall” as well. So, Waters decided to idle both engines. With his idea, the plane’s engines worked with both engines, but the ENG 2 had too much power. So, he could make an emergency landing. Suddenly, he found an “overspeed warning”. Waters thought he couldn’t slow the plane to make a safe landing, so he decided to land the plane at high speed.
The plane landed with a bouncy and hard landing, but the crew were able to stop the plane.[1]
Awards
In March 2014, Waters and Hayhoe were awarded the Polaris Award by the International Federation of Air Line Pilots' Associations, for their heroism and airmanship.
