Maldevia
Maldevia Movement (Dhivehi: މަހަލްދެވިޔާ މަސްލަހަތު) is an emerging socio-political movement in the Maldives advocating for the transformation of the Republic of Maldives into a secular Civic National Socialist state. Launched conceptually around 2026, it seeks to establish universal human rights — particularly freedom of belief and freedom of choice — while promoting religious pluralism, secular laws, civic nationalism, and socialist economic policies.
The movement revives the historical Arabic name Mahal Deviya (or Mahal Dibiyat, meaning “islands of palaces/grandeur”) to symbolize cultural rebirth and distance from current religious and governance structures.
== Ideology and Goals == The Maldevia Movement proposes:
• A secular republic separating religion from state affairs.
• Freedom of belief — Full legal protection for practicing Christianity, Islam, atheism, agnosticism, or any other faith/non-faith.
• Freedom of choice — Right to change beliefs and live according to personal convictions without discrimination.
• Civic nationalism — National identity based on shared citizenship, democratic participation, and inclusive values.
• National socialist principles (reinterpreted civically) — State-directed policies for social welfare, equitable resource distribution, environmental sustainability (e.g., climate adaptation), and collective ownership in key sectors like tourism and fisheries.
• Open citizenship regardless of religion or background.
These aims address perceived limitations in the current constitution, which mandates Sunni Islam as the state religion and restricts citizenship to Muslims.
== Symbolism == The movement’s proposed flag is a horizontal tricolor of red (top), white (middle), and red (bottom), with a central golden solar eclipse emblem (darkened disc with radiant rays).
Here are visual interpretations of the eclipse motif, symbolizing darkness (current struggles) giving way to renewal and light under the new vision:
• Red stripes: Sacrifice, resilience, and socialist struggle.
• White stripe: Peace, purity, and civic equality.
• Eclipse: Transformation after challenges, with rays representing hope and a new era.
== Current Status == As of January 12, 2026, the Maldevia Movement remains in its early, discussion-based phase — primarily online and in reformist circles — amid broader Maldivian debates on governance, secularism, and rights. It draws from historical names and responds to contemporary issues like economic inequality and climate threats, but has no formal organization or widespread recognition yet.
