Addu people wanted to make a New Republic, Independent from the government in Malé, which was regarded as authoritarian.
On the 1st of January in 1959, the United Suvadive Republic was formed, and when the Republic was abolished, the agreement between the Maldives and the British was signed on the 26th of July in 1965.[1] On the 26th of July in 1965, Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir signed the Independence Agreement with the British.[2]
The agreement was reached following discussions between the Maldives' representative in the Dominion of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Abdul Sattar Moosa Didi, and Sir Humphrey Arthington-Davy, the British representative. After Independence, the Kingdom of the Maldives became a titular monarchy, albeit, outside the Commonwealth, which was in turn replaced by a Republic on the 11th of November in 1968. Pakistan was one of the first countries to recognize the Maldives as an independent nation on the 27th of July in 1965 respectively. Both countries established diplomatic relations on the 26th of July in 1966.[3]
