Maldives Autism Association
Maldives Autism Association (MAA) is an autism awareness organization in Maldives. MAA has created various programs to teach educators of children with ASDs and given seminars and workshops on various islands across the country. In addition to this, they have programs which cater to parents of children with ASDs, teaching them how to manage behaviors and work around routines to keep the child happy. They also planned and carried out National Awareness Campaigns in conjunction with other Maldives-based NGOs and businesses.[1][2]
According to MAA's statistics, over the course of its existence, they have served over 1200 children with autism, trained more than 500 special education teachers and provided support and training sessions to over 1500 parents.
The centre in which the work is carried out now is located in Hulhumalé on Chambeylee Magu, and was inaugurated on July 24th, 2017.[3] The school has the capacity to cater to over 100 children, with 95 kids registered as of April, 2018.[4]
History[edit]
MMA was founded on 21st January 2010 by Madam Ilham Hussain. She talked to mothers of children with ASDs, who asserted that their children needed an institution which offered special education. Madam Ilham, with support from her husband, Dr. Mohamed Waheed, opened the Maldives Autism Association.[5]
Government Recognition[edit]
During her time as First Lady of the Maldives, Madam Ilham visited India's National Center for Autism, after which she urged Maldivian educators of children with Autism to attend the institute to receive training.[6] On April 21st 2019, First Lady Fazna Ahmed inaugurated the Autism Association's website and a child screening program, which targeted some 100 children who were already attending the Autism Centre. In a speech, she acknowledged the work of MAA and other civil society organizations in pushing for a reasonable quality of life for individuals with disabilities and stated that the wider Maldivian community have a responsibility to ensure individuals with disabilities can have a normal life.[7] On August 29th, 2021, Vice-President Faisal Naseem launched, along with Madam Ilham, a guidebook for children with autism.[8]
Funding[edit]
A number of resorts in Maldives have held fundraisers in support of MAA, with one such resort being Constance Moofushi.[9][10] In 2018, the resort management organized a run, along with some of the guests, around the perimeter of the island; this event generated 60,500 rufiyaa.[11] On August 18th, 2021, the ambassador of Japan to Maldives, Keiko Yanai, presented a donation of vision and hearing screeners to Madam Ilham.[12] Recently, the Maldives Airports Company Ltd.
