Malibu Feed Bin
The Malibu Feed Bin was a pet food and supply store in Malibu, California. The building was destroyed in the Palisades Fire on January 7, 2025.[1]
History
The Malibu Feed Bin, located at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Topanga Canyon Boulevard, was founded in 1961 by Ace Smith.[2] It was purchased by Marty and Patricia Morehart in 1966,[3] and remained in their family for four generations until its destruction in 2025.[4]
In 2001, the land was acquired to be turned into Topanga State Park,[5] and the Malibu Feed Bin was one of the businesses initially considered for demolition.[3] The State Parks hired a historian to determine which businesses were culturally relevant, and the Malibu Feed Bin was one of the businesses under consideration.[6] In 2003, Malibu Feed Bin was deemed "not compatible with serving visitors in a state park," [7] but later that year they agreed to make changes and were able to remain in business.[8]
In 2003, the business put up a white banner, measuring 40 feet (12 m) by 3 feet (0.91 m) with "God Bless Our Troops" written in large blue lettering, in honor of the owners' son, a corporal in the United States Marine Corps fighting in the Iraq War. The sign was stolen over the weekend of November 15-16, 2003, possibly by a woman who called the business complaining that their building already had too many signs on display.[9]
