Malin + Goetz is a high-end, wholesale and retail skin care brand that also sells hair care, fragrance, and other products. The company is headquartered in New York City and operates 11 stores in the United States and the United Kingdom. Its products are also sold online and are stocked in 600 third party retail locations and hotels.[1]
History[edit]
Malin + Goetz was founded New York City by married couple Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz. The first store opened in in March 2004 in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood, and was designed as a “modern-day apothecary.”[2] Malin, a skincare executive, and Goetz, a design industry professional, fueled early growth of the company with long work hours and heavy credit card debt.[3]
The brand’s physical footprint has expanded slowly but intentionally, with five stores in New York City, three in London, two in Los Angeles, and one in San Francisco. The brand also operates a retail website and runs a wholesale business with select partners.[1][4]
By 2014, Malin + Goetz had sales in excess of $10 million[3] and in 2015 the brand was acquired by Manzanita Capital. The infusion of capital has helped fuel additional growth.[5]
Marketing[edit]
The brand is known for its stores, many of which are designed by noted interior design studios such as Messana O'Rorke, and its minimalist, typically white, packaging.[6] The brand was designed to reflect a modern reimagining of a traditional apothecary. As such, packaging is meant to appear like contemporary versions of traditional chemists’ labels.[7] The brand is marketed as primarily using natural ingredients in its products, avoiding irritants while using naturally-derived preservatives.[8]
The company grew brand awareness by forging amenity partnerships with restaurants, gyms, and Delta Airlines.[7]
Management[edit]
Brad Horowitz has been CEO since 2018, taking the position after roles at L’Oreal USA and Clarins USA.[9]
