Management Approach – Key to Efficiency By Petronila C. Lumagui – MBA Camarines Norte State College

Managing employees is not easy. They are not perfect. They can have a whole list of inefficient characteristics. Every employee is different and they all work to the best of their abilities in different ways. If you are a manager what do you think is the best way to deal with inefficiency? And what is that factor that can contribute to the success of an organization?

As a manager, possessing management skill is important to succeed in the workplace. Understanding and applying management theory is also essential. Finding suitable theory in accordance to the circumstance at your workplace is beneficial. It assists in increasing the service quality and organizational productivity. Effectivity and efficiency is attained when a combination of theories are used while implementing strategies in the office.

Working in different organizations from automotive, chemical company, advertising agency, oil and gas, insurance agency to school is a good experience. Every organization is unique in culture. But no matter how unique they are there is always something in common about the way employees are handled. Analyzing the theories that employers used in those organizations gave me the realization that the efficiency of employees can only be attained with the right combination of management theories.

Human Relations Theory, developed by Elton Mayo is prevalent. This theory is a powerful management tool. Workplace relationships provide a source of employee motivation, which is important to maintaining productivity and efficiency. Without quality workplace relationships, employees are less likely to be able to develop and share the solutions that a business needs to survive. Scientific Theory is a philosophy that dealt with the relationship of people and work by finding the “one best way” in increasing work efficiency. Integrating money as good motivational device (An amount of work to an equal pay) is a good motivation too. Theory X and Y by Douglas McGregor were also applied. The management theory an individual choose to apply is strongly subjective to the beliefs about the attitudes of the employee. The managers who tend to follow the Theory X values often use a controlling style of leadership, Theory Y leaders inspire participation from the employees. These theories in my observation were applied in my previous employments.

Though right combination of theories is essential for efficiency and productivity, a good manager also need to show a level of competency in his/her field. He/she must be passionate about the organization and goal of his/her team. He/She is the kind of manager who is admired, respected and is highly spoken of by his co-workers. He/She has to show leadership, integrity and work ethics. Constant communication is also a key aspect in engaging employees. That is a good management approach.
