Manaia Stewart is a New Zealand radio broadcaster, television personality, and sports commentator. He co-hosts the Hauraki Breakfast on Radio Hauraki alongside Jeremy Wells, and regularly appears across broadcast and television productions with The Alternative Commentary Collective (The ACC).
Early life
Stewart was raised in Waimate, South Canterbury. He attended secondary school in Oamaru, commuting daily on a school bus where he met his partner, Jess Burgess.[1] Stewart later earned a university degree in communications and marketing.[2]
Prior to full-time media employment, Stewart worked agricultural and manual labour jobs throughout South Canterbury, including in shearing sheds and at the Pareora freezing works.[2] He later spent time in England as an alpaca shearer before returning to New Zealand to complete studies in radio broadcasting.[1]
Broadcasting and television career
Stewart entered the media industry after moving to Auckland to work in advertising, later joining the promotions department at Radio Hauraki.[2] He moved to on-air roles hosting Saturday morning sports programming before co-hosting the station's weekday drive show alongside Leigh Hart and Matt Ward in 2019.[1] Following the conclusion of the show during the COVID-19 pandemic, he temporarily worked as a stevedore at the Port of Auckland.[1]
Stewart subsequently became a central commentator and host for The Alternative Commentary Collective (The ACC), an alternative sports entertainment network operated by NZME. Within the network, he has co-hosted the rugby league programme Mad Monday alongside comedians Dai Henwood and Ben Hurley.[1]
In September 2024, Stewart joined the broadcast television revival of the sports comedy quiz show Game of 2 Halves (broadcast as The ACC Does Game of 2 Halves) on Sky Open and Sky Sport, serving as a team captain opposite Matt Heath.[3][4] He has also provided televised alternate commentary for TVNZ coverage of sporting events, including the Fox Golf tournament.[5]
In January 2025, Stewart was appointed co-host of the Hauraki Breakfast, succeeding Matt Heath and co-anchoring the morning programme alongside Jeremy Wells.[2][6]
Personal life
Stewart lives in Auckland with his partner Jess Burgess, an ungulates zookeeper at Auckland Zoo.[1]
