(M.K. Bhuyan) Manas Kamal Bhuyan is an Indian academic and researcher whose work focuses on artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, image and signal processing, human–computer interaction, and assistive technologies. He is a Professor (HAG) in the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati), and a Professor in the Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at the same institution. He additionally serves as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Chubu University, Japan. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and a Fellow of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) and the Institution of Engineers (India).[1]
Bhuyan is the recipient of the National Award for Best Applied Research/Technological Innovation conferred by the President of India in 2013,[2] the Fulbright Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowship (2013–14),[3] and the Outstanding Achievers' Recognition presented by the Vice President of India in 2021.[4] He has authored over 330 research publications, supervised 30 doctoral scholars, and developed two widely enrolled NPTEL video courses on machine learning and computer vision.[1][5][6]
Education and Academic career
He received his Ph.D. in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati under a UGC Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). He subsequently carried out postdoctoral research in two internationally prominent settings in Australia: as part of the Security and Surveillance group at the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE), University of Queensland, Brisbane; and as a Researcher with the SAFE (Smart Applications for Emergencies) Sensor Research Group at National ICT Australia (NICTA), Brisbane, where he contributed to the Safeguarding Australia Programme funded by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Government of Australia. Bhuyan held faculty positions at Jorhat Engineering College, Assam, and the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Roorkee and served in the Indian Engineering Services. He held a Visiting Professorship at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), Purdue University, USA, from 2014 to 2015, under the Fulbright Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowship. Since 2020, he has been a Visiting Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Chubu University, Japan, a collaboration facilitated through a formal MOU between Chubu University and IIT Guwahati.[1]
Administrative roles
Bhuyan served as Associate Dean of Infrastructure Planning and Management (IPM) at IIT Guwahati from 2019 to 2022, and as Dean of Infrastructure Planning and Management from 2022 to 2025. Since 2026, he has been serving as Chair of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Guwahati Chapter.[1][7]
Research
Bhuyan's research spans machine learning, deep learning, artificial intelligence, computer vision, image and video processing, human–computer interaction (HCI), virtual and augmented reality, and biomedical signal processing.[8] He has authored over 330 peer-reviewed publications in reputed international journals and conferences, with strong representation in IEEE Transactions, Elsevier journals and journals of the Nature Publishing Group.[1]
Indian Sign Language recognition and assistive technologies
Bhuyan is one of India's pioneering researchers in Indian Sign Language (ISL) recognition and education, with over 27 years of sustained contributions to this domain. His doctoral work established foundational finite state machine and trajectory-based techniques for recognising dynamic hand gestures from visual images. Following his doctorate, he led a series of funded national projects under India's National Mission for Education through Information and Communication Technology (NME-ICT), MHRD, Government of India, to develop an Automatic Indian Sign Language Education and Recognition Platform—a comprehensive system for real-time ISL recognition, including continuous and two-handed gestures, intended to support hearing-impaired students across India. This work was further developed under projects funded by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The National Award for Best Applied Research/Technological Innovation (2012) conferred by the Government of India recognised these contributions as having significant impact on the lives of persons with disabilities.[1][8][4][9]
Medical image analysis and healthcare AI
Bhuyan and his collaborators have made notable contributions to AI-based medical image analysis. A research team led by him developed an artificial-intelligence-based platform for the early detection of colorectal cancer using colonoscopy images, which was published in the journal Scientific Reports (Nature) in 2021.[10] This work was covered by major Indian news outlets including The Times of India, NDTV, The Financial Express, Deccan Herald, and The Economic Times, and was featured in a dedicated segment on Rajya Sabha Television's Gyan Vigyan News programme.[11][12][13][14]
His broader work in healthcare AI encompasses endoscopic polyp segmentation and 3D reconstruction, semi-supervised GAN-based medical image classification, breast cancer classification using multiscale context fusion, non-contact heart rate estimation, seismocardiogram (SCG)-based cardiac analysis, cuffless blood pressure estimation, and lymph node annotation from CT images.[8]
His research team's earlier work on automatic polyp detection in endoscopic images using a Hessian filter—a collaboration with Prof. Yuji Iwahori at Chubu University, Japan, and Prof. Robert J. Woodham at the University of British Columbia, Canada—was recognised with the Most Influential Research Paper Over the Decade Award at the 18th International Conference on Machine Vision Applications (MVA 2023), held in Hamamatsu, Japan.[4]
Video surveillance and tracking
During his postdoctoral period in Australia, Bhuyan conducted research on intelligent CCTV surveillance within the SAFE Project at NICTA. He proposed a pedestrian classification and tracking system combining blob matching with particle filtering to track multiple people in outdoor environments such as railway stations, including under partial occlusion. He extended this to multi-camera tracking using a two-level approach combining image-level tracking with ground-level particle filter-based tracking. His contributions were acknowledged in the SAFE (Sensors) Strategic Project Review 2007, conducted by National ICT Australia.[8][4]
Remote sensing and semantic segmentation
More recent contributions from Bhuyan's group include transformer-based SAR image despeckling (published in IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2025), hyperspectral image super-resolution using spectral attention networks, and deep-learning-based satellite image segmentation and roadway extraction. In the domain of real-time semantic segmentation for autonomous driving, his group has developed lightweight networks including DMPNet, SLICENet, DECoDeNet, and CTPNet, with associated FPGA-based hardware accelerators.[8]
Virtual Presence Platform
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bhuyan developed a Virtual Presence Platform that enabled graduates, faculty, and guests to participate remotely in the 22nd Convocation of IIT Guwahati (2020) using virtual avatars. The platform received substantial national media coverage, including in The Times of India and Hindustan Times.[4][15][16]
Teaching and educational contributions
Bhuyan is the author of the textbook Computer Vision and Image Processing: Fundamentals and Applications, published by CRC Press, USA, in 2019 (ISBN 978-0815370840), which was reviewed as recommended for upper-division undergraduates, faculty, and professionals in the December 2020 issue of Choice Reviews.[17][18] He is also the author of Machine Learning and Deep Learning – Fundamentals and Applications, published by CRC Press.[19] He has developed two 12-week NPTEL video courses: Machine Learning and Deep Learning: Fundamentals and Applications and Computer Vision and Image Processing – Fundamentals and Applications.[5][6] He additionally developed a web course on Computer Vision and Applications under the National Mission for Education through ICT, MHRD, Government of India.[19] Bhuyan has guided 30 Ph.D. scholars, 1 post-doctoral researcher, 45 M.Tech. students, and 53 B.Tech. students.[1] He has delivered over 80 invited lectures, keynote addresses, and faculty development programme talks at institutions across India and internationally, covering topics including deep learning, transformers, GANs, biomedical image analysis, and computer vision. International keynote and invited lectures include talks at the Second International Conference on Electrical, Electronics, Computer Engineering and their Applications (Manila, Philippines, 2015), the 6th IEEE Asian Conference on Defence Technology (Bali, Indonesia, 2019), the Indo-French Seminar on Matrix Information Geometries at École Polytechnique (Paris, France, 2011), and the 2nd International Conference on Signal Processing and Computer Vision (NIT Silchar, 2025). He served as a tutorial speaker at IEEE GCON 2026 on Transformers Beyond Language: The Rise of Vision Transformers.[7]
