Manash Chowdhury (born July 21, 1976) is a Bangladeshi table tennis player[1] who has won the national championship five times.[2] He has also represented Bangladesh in various international competitions, including the Asian Table Tennis Championship,[3] the Commonwealth Games and World Table Tennis Championships.[2]

Early life and Career Beginnings

Manash Chowdhury was born and raised in Chattogram, Bangladesh. He started playing table tennis at a young age, watching his uncle Swapan Chowdhury practice with other paddlers at the Agrani Sangha local club next to his house. He often played with Asif Iqbal, a famous lyricist and composer who was also a skilled table tennis player. Local champions Rupam Dutta and Dr. Arup Dutta noticed his talent and invited him to join their club, Nabin Mela, where Rupam Dutta became his first trainer.

Junior and National Championships

Chowdhury participated in his first Junior National Championship in 1990, where he finished in 14th place.[4] The following year, he won his first title in the Junior Championship, which earned him a spot on the Bangladesh contingent for the Asian Table Tennis Championship 1992 in New Delhi. It was his first international competition and foreign tour. He continued to compete in various junior competitions, winning numerous titles and representing Bangladesh in the SAARC-ASEAN Table Tennis Tournament in 1998 in Dhaka.

After a break from the sport to complete his medical studies, Chowdhury resumed playing in 2007. He went on to become the national champion five times, winning in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2015,[4][5] and finishing as the runner-up four times in 2001, 2010, 2016, and 2019.[6] Chowdhury also won 5 Men's Singles Championship in Federation Cup Table Tennis—including a recent one held in 2021.[7]

International Competitions

Chowdhury has also represented Bangladesh in various international competitions. In the South Asian Games 2010, he won a bronze medal in the men’s team event. In the Commonwealth Games 2014, he finished in the top 32 (pre-quarter) in the men’s singles category.[6] He has also participated in two Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships in 2007 and 2019, five Asian Table Tennis Championships in 1992, 2009, 2015, 2017 and 2019, and four World Table Tennis Championships in 2011 (singles and doubles category), 2013 (singles and doubles category), 2014 (team category), and 2017 (singles and doubles category).[3]

Personal life

In addition to his table tennis career, Chowdhury is a dentist. He completed his B.D.S (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) in 2002 and works as a private practitioner at his own clinic in Chattogram.[6] Apart from this, he is known as Ranjan Chowdhury as a playback singer in Bangladesh. He sang for 4 solo and 25 mixed and duet albums. He is married and has two children.
