Overview[edit]

The Manathlon is an annual tournament involving sports, skill, drinking and various other challenges. Held at multiple venues primarily in Fife, Scotland, the format of the tounament spans over a single weekend, Friday night to Sunday morning.

History[edit]

The concept was born in 2014, from the mind of the original founder Richard Wilson during a round of golf with co-contributor David Buckley.

Plans for the first tournament started in June 2015, with 10 men willing to become Manathletes. The challenges and venues were discussed by all Manathletes, however a location for the tournament was not agreed upon in the first instance. A group camping trip provided the perfect opportunity to host the first tournament, which would be known as 'Campathlon'.

Following a successful Campathlon, a second tournament was held in the spring of 2017. This tournament was the first to bear the name 'Manathlon'.

Format[edit]

The tournament ran over 2 days, and comprised of 11 individual challenges. Each challenge was scored in the same way, with a maximum of 70 points available in each challenge. 1st place received 70 points, 2nd place 60 points, 3rd place 50 points and so on. In any instance of a tied placing, each Manathlete would receive the maximum scoring for that placing, with the next placing omitted from the scoring.

Challenge Notes[edit]

Bowling[edit]

The Bowling event was held at Fraser Bowl in Glenrothes. This was the first event of the Manathlon, which took place on the Friday evening. Scott Fyfe made a special guest appearance and bowled a good game. If not being able to attend the full Manathlon he could have went on to stardom.

Punch Machine[edit]

The Punch Machine event was held at Fraser Bowl, Glenrothes. This was the second event on the friday evening. The highlight was Dane managing to score just 1 point on the punch machine. After a disappointing bowling event, this made him angry and wheel spun out of the car park.

Pool[edit]

The Pool event was held at the Snooker Club, Glenrothes. The event was the third of the Manathlon, held last thing on Friday night. The vent time was severely estimated. the mixture of alcohol and excitement made this an endurance event.

Badminton[edit]

The Badminton event was held at the Micheal Woods Centre, Glenrothes. Some Manathletes were fatigued from the previous nights events, however every Manathlete turned up for the event. There was no surprises within this event, as the favourite Steven Scott come out on top.

Clay Pigeon Shooting[edit]

The Clay Pigeon Shooting event was held at Cluny Clays, Cluny. Having turned up at the event, all Manathletes were given the smallest gauge shotgun possible, and led into a small wooded area. Simon Todd proved to be the sharpshooter of the day, with a worrying display of shooting accuracy.

Go-Karts[edit]

The Go-Karts event took place at Kartstart, Kirkcaldy. The compact track layout made for a interesting display of driving. A stewarding error left Richard Wilson starting from the back of the grid on both Grand Prixs. His aggressive attempt to regain position further up the grid, led to a safety car situation, resulting in a destroyed track, and Craig Allan shunted into the tyre wall.

Golf[edit]

The Golf event took place at Wellsgreen Driving Range, Leven. The event took place on a small Par-3 course, consisting of 6 holes. The odds-on favourite Simon Todd, showed a miserable display, slicing several tee-shots wildly into a nearby farm yard, leaving a shock performance from Dane Medeiros as the event winner.

Cracker Eating[edit]

The Cracker Eating event took place at Dunbeath Drive, Glenrothes. The event consisted of eating 5 plain crackers consectutively in the fastest possible times, with bonus points available by adding a teaspoon of hot chilli sauce to the final cracker. Jack Wilson took 1st place in this event, with a total win of 80 points, the highest achieved in any Manathlon event to date. After a few strong performances, Richard Wilson came last in the cracker Eating event. It looks as though his luck was drying out...

Computer Game 1[edit]

The Computer Game 1 event took place at Dunbeath Drive, Glenrothes. A racing game provided a challenging event, in which each Manathlete had to compete a point to point race in the quickest time. After a dreadful qualification round, Richard Wilson had an excellent final sector to snatch the victory from the jaws of defeat.

1/2 Yard Challenge[edit]

The 1/2 Yard Challenge event took place at Dunbeath Drive, Glenrothes. 750ml of Tennents lager was poured into a half yard vessel. Each Manathlete had to drink all of the lager within the quickest time frame to complete the event. Almost every Manathlete fell victim to the dreaded 'bubble' at the bottom of the vessel, leading to a small amount of vomiting from one particular Manathlete. A nervous Dane Medeiros found a new talent for drinking beer quickly, with a winning time of 17 seconds.

Computer Game 2[edit]

The Computer Game 2 event took place at Dunbeath Drive, Glenrothes. A battle to the death on Mortal Kombat, held in a round robin format, ensured everyone fought each other once, using the same character. This marathon event, led to the realisation that future Computer Game event formats would need to be revised, as several Manathletes suffered fatigue and resorted to doodling.

Poker Tournament[edit]

The Poker event, took place at Dunbeath Drive, Glenrothes. After a long winded tournament, the effects of competition and excessive alcohol consumption took its tool on the Manathletes going into the final event. Steven Scott beat off every Manathlete with a good hand, leaving him with a clear path to victory.
