Mandaue Gay Pageant
The Mandaue Gay Pageant is the elegant pioneering transpinay pageant in the Philippines. Branded as a gay pageant because there are often homosexual men, cross-dressers and drag queens who participate in the event. It has already been known historically as Ms Gay. Gay in Cebuano is synonymous to Bayot or a local term that describes an effeminate gay man or transgender woman. The Pageant is usually celebrated on May 10 or after the religious feast of May 8, the feat of St Joseph, Mandaue to appease the religious community.
History[edit]
There were drag pageants as early as the 1960s which were often held as small events synchronously celebrated during May for the fiesta of Mandaue.[1]
The pageant became more prominent when Miss Gay International on May 1972 started, it was patterned after the Ms Universe pageant and maybe even the Empress of San Francisco Pageant. Each candidate represented a country, exoticism, diversity or prominence were factors that filled the celebration which beguiled and entertained the audience.
The Pageant took the name of Carnival Queen to have a more circus feel and have an explosive plethora of colors that is represented in the LGBT Rainbow Flag.
On 2013 the Mandaue Gay Pageant was started, theatricality in the direction has created colorful themes for the newly branded pageant.
The first Mandaue Gay Pageant was Maharani on May 7, 2013;[2] it celebrated Indian Culture and the wives of the Maharajas which was held in the Mandaue Heritage Plaza. The names of each contestant were change to have a Hindu feel.
Geisha in 2014 celebrated the artists and beautifully painted Japanese women were echoed in the performances of the candidates. Cost-playing was also celebrated by having enthusiasts wear costumes and the best one would win a cash prize.[3]
The theme for 2015 was Cleopatra, honoring the Queen of the Nile and Egyptian culture, is the most attended Miss Gay pageant in Mandaue in its history. A hodgepodge of the modern Arabic and Ancient Egyptian elements were featured.[4]
Performance[edit]
In Mandaue, there has been a tradition of presenting the candidates before and after the pageant which would include the Miss Mandaue, Queen, Prince and Princess of Mandaue Candidates.
The typical Philippine Pageant Formula may be followed but there is usually artistic freedom under the direction. Swimsuit portion,[5] Costumes (National, International or a Mixture) portion, Evening Gown, Talent portion, Question and Answer portion and Awarding Ceremony.
The particular features presented by the candidates that draws the crowds are:
- Talent- the costumes, dances, theatricality, singing et al.
- Poise- body language, femininity [6]
- Wit- depth and girth of the question and answer
- Humor- a tinge of slapstick and sarcasm
