Mandl's Paint

Mandl's Paint is a throat paint that has been used in the treatment of sore throat.[1][2]

It is composed of 1.25% iodine and 2.5% potassium iodide in peppermint oil and 90% alcohol in glycerin.[3][4]

Pharmacology[edit]

Role of iodine in treating common disorders especially sore throat and influenza has been documented on many occasions; usually a common way to overcome the sore throat is through saline gargles, also effect is observed with topical spraying of colloidal iodine solution and daily use of mandl's paint shows a prophylactic effect.[2] In the formulations part, iodine acts as an antiseptic, potassium iodide acts as dissolving agent for iodine, peppermint oil acts as flavouring agent and produces cooling effect, alcohol acts as a solubilising agent for peppermint oil, glycerin is added to make the medicament viscous so that the medicament remains in contact with the mucous membrane for a longer period.[5]In the modern scenario its efficacy is contested, depending on the subjects.[6]
