Manuel Hobiger (* 1982 in Würzburg[1]) is a German seismologist, volcano expert, and quiz player. He is best known as one of the “chasers” on Gefragt – gejagt, the German version of the U.K. game show The Chase.

Hobiger has been taking part in quizzing competitions since 2006.[2] He is a former German champion in the individual competition, German runner-up at the World Quizzing Championships, multiple German champion in buzzer quizzing, a member of the German national quizzing team, and the founding vice president of the Deutscher Quiz-Verein (German Quizzing Association).[3]

In 2003, Hobiger appeared as a contestant on the RTL TV quiz show Wer wird Millionär?, the German version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and won €500.[2] In August 2012, he won €500,000 on the ZDF quiz show Der Super-Champion (now named Der Quiz-Champion). On Gefragt – gejagt, he first appeared as a contestant and, together with two other finalists, won €27,500 against “chaser” Klaus Otto Nagorsnik in an episode which aired in April 2017. One year later, on 24 May 2018, he himself became a chaser on the show.

Hobiger graduated from Riemenschneider-Gymnasium in his native Würzburg[4], studied Physics at the University of Würzburg and graduated in 2007. He continued with postgraduate studies at the Université Grenoble Alpes in France and obtained his doctorate degree with a thesis entitled Polarization of surface waves: characterization, inversion and application to seismic hazard assessment. From 2010 until 2013, he worked as a postdoc for the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources in Hanover, and since 2013, he has been employed as a research fellow and seismologist at the Swiss Seismological Service in Zurich.[5]
