Many Lives, Many Masters
Many Lives, Many Masters is a short book written by Dr. Brian Weiss. Dr. Weiss is a psychiatrist who used to practice in Miami, Florida. His book was published in 1988 and tells a story about one of his patients, a young girl named Catherine. The book talks about Catherine’s story with mental illness and strives to open readers’ eyes to hypnosis/past life therapy.
History of Dr. Weiss
Dr. Brian Weiss was born in New York City in the United States. He attended Yale School of Medicine with hopes of becoming a psychiatrist. He practiced in Miami Beach, Florida and became the head of psychiatry at Mount Sinai. Before becoming an advocate for hypnotic therapy, Dr. Weiss was very scientific and did not believe in methods that could not be backed up by medicine. After using hypnotic therapy and focusing on past life events, Dr. Weiss became well-known for treating patients with this kind of therapy.
Plot
Many Lives, Many Masters starts off in 1980 when Dr. Brian Weiss met a 27-year-old patient named Catherine who suffered from anxiety, panic attacks, and phobias[1]. Dr. Weiss struggled to treat her, trying methods for over a year without succeeding. Dr. Weiss finally decided to try hypnosis. Hypnosis is known as a state of highly focused attention or concentration, often associated with relaxation and heightened suggestibility[2]. After going through sessions of hypnosis with Catherine, Dr. Weiss was able to understand where her psychological issues were coming from. Catherine held a number of repressed memories from her past life that included her own father molesting her while drunk and swallowing and gagging water from a pool. She also was able to recall her birth and death from her past life, all in vivid detail. Catherine also mentions in the book how she began to receive messages from masters of life which related to her near-death experience. After going through sessions of hypnosis, Catherine was able to move past her anxiety, phobias, and depression. After treating Catherine, Dr. Weiss was able to understand that she had repressed memories stored in her unconscious that led her to go through mental disorders.
Importance of Hypnosis Therapy
Hypnosis has immense value in the psychological world. Even though hypnosis is not something that can be proved scientifically, it is highly used by psychologists and psychiatrists today. Hypnosis is important because it digs deep into one’s mind. Sometimes, patients cannot recall such traumatic events in their past, so hypnosis can help trigger that event and helps the therapist treat it. In the case of Dr. Brian Weiss, hypnosis was used for a person to be able to look at their past life and recount events that lie deep in their unconscious. By looking into one’s past life, they are better able to understand why they act and feel the way they do currently. Not only does it help them understand but helps them on the path of recovery.
