MapleStory Universe 2

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

MapleStory Universe (often abbreviated MSU) is a blockchain-based gaming ecosystem developed by NEXPACE, an Abu Dhabi-based blockchain subsidiary of South Korean video game publisher Nexon.

The platform extends the MapleStory intellectual property, a free-to-play, 2D, side-scrolling massively multiplayer online role-playing game launched in 2003, into a Web3 environment in which selected in-game items can be tokenised as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and traded on its custom Layer 1 blockchain, powered by Avalanche.[1] The platform's first game, MapleStory N, launched on 15 May 2025 alongside its native cryptocurrency token, NXPC.[1]

History

MapleStory Universe was first announced by Nexon at the Game Developers Conference in March 2023, originally planned to launch on a dedicated Polygon Supernet.[2][3] In March 2024, Nexon announced that the project would migrate from Polygon to a custom Avalanche Layer 1 blockchain,[4] following the discontinuation of Polygon Edge tooling.[5] The custom chain used to launch the project's first game MapleStory N, was named Henesys and operated as an Avalanche subnet built using AvaCloud.[1]

Nexon's blockchain operations were established as a UAE subsidiary, NEXPACE, headquartered in Abu Dhabi.[6] Nexon had formed Nexon Universe Global and NEXPACE in the UAE in 2023, as part of a broader strategy to expand its blockchain initiatives.[6] In media reports, NEXPACE chief operating officer Keith Kim said the team had relocated from Korea to Abu Dhabi after searching for the "most clearly regulated place in the world", citing the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) as the rationale.[7] CEO Sunyoung Hwang, described the company's Abu Dhabi presence as "rooted in long-term strategic orientation".[8]

MapleStory N and the NXPC token launched simultaneously on 15 May 2025.[1] NEXPACE chief operating officer Keith Kim characterised the project as "a huge experiment" intended to extend the MapleStory franchise's commercial life through blockchain-driven, market-led item issuance.[9]

Platform

MapleStory Universe is structured around a custom Layer 1 blockchain built using Avalanche subnet technology (AvaCloud).[1] The platform's first game is MapleStory N, a PC-based MMORPG that retains the 2D side-scrolling combat and progression of the original MapleStory while introducing on-chain item ownership and a fixed-supply item economy in which limited-quantity NFT items are obtainable through gameplay rather than direct purchase.[5][2]

The platform uses a dual-token model: NXPC, the native cryptocurrency token, and NESO, an in-game currency earned through play. NXPC is used for in-game functions including item crafting, NFT creation, and player rewards, with issuance and supply limits intended to mirror real-world economic principles.[5]

NXPC token

NXPC is the native utility token of MapleStory Universe. The token's primary functions are item crafting, NFT creation and player rewards within the platform.[5]

NXPC was listed on multiple major cryptocurrency exchanges at launch on 15 May 2025, including Binance, Bybit, Upbit and Bithumb. The token traded at approximately US$2.31 on Binance on 18 May 2025.[5] The simultaneous multi-exchange listing was reported as a reflection of high market expectations for the launch.[5]

Reception and adoption

The launch was framed in terms of NEXPACE's strategy of using the original MapleStory user base to drive blockchain adoption.[10] Former COO Dominic Jang described the platform's intent as merging "global IP with Web3 to build a gaming economy rooted in fun, ownership and longevity".[11] In a separate interview, the company described the platform as enabling player ownership of in-game assets through blockchain.[12]

Industry observers viewed Nexon's blockchain entry as significant given the company's three-decade legacy in the South Korean gaming industry, and noted that NEXPACE's approach was distinguished from earlier play-to-earn projects by being "built on a proven IP and solid gameplay foundation".[10] As of the launch and continuing thereafter, MapleStory N has not been available in South Korea due to domestic regulations restricting play-to-earn games.[5]
