The Maratha dynasty (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist., Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) was an Indian imperial house, consisting of the members from the imperial House of Shivaji (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist., Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) also known as the Marathas (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist., Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.). The family arose from the Marahtta tribe, whose members claims their ancestry to Rajputs, a branch of Western Indo-Aryans, under the leadership of Shivaji I, in the Konkan region. The Maratha dynasty, named after the tribe, ruled the Maratha Empire from 1674 to 1818.[1]

The Chhatrapati was the supreme leader, head of state and head of the government during much of the empire's history, though the military and external powers were transferred to the Peshwa. During the empire's decentralization era between 1739 and 1761, the Peshwa took on the role as the head of government and leader of the Ashta Pradhan while a shift to constitutional monarchy was enacted.

The family was deposed from power on 13 April 1818, following the Third Anglo-Maratha War. The living members of the family were reduced into ceremonial heads in Satara, with a pension by British. The main living members of the family, in its current form, are called the Bhonsle family.
