Marc Bennetts is a British journalist and author, presently known for his extensive reporting on the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. He was formerly based in Moscow for The Times and The Sunday Times.[1] While there he covered the 2018 World Cup as well as the poisoning of Alexei Navalny.[2]
He moved to Russia in 1997, but left after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and being arrested for reporting on an anti-war protest in Moscow, along with a dozen or so other protesters. "Putin is keen on taking western hostages and I wondered if I was about to become a pawn in a Cold War-style prisoner exchange", he recalled.[3]
Bennetts is the author of two books: I'm Going to Ruin Their Lives, about Putin’s crackdown on the opposition, and Football Dynamo, about Russian football culture.[4] Online outlet openDemocracy described I'm Going to Ruin Their Lives as "an excellent primer for anyone trying to get a handle on Russian politics".[5]
Bennetts has frequently appeared as an expert voice on television and radio, including the BBC and RTE.[6][7]
