Marc Nicholls
Marc Nicholls is an English-born football coach and director. He is currently the Technical Director of Charlotte FC.[1] Before his arrival at Charlotte FC in 2020, he acted as Director of Player Development at Seattle Sounders FC and General Manager for the USL team, Tacoma Defiance[2]. He has additional experience outside of the MLS, as he coached for several clubs and teams in Louisiana, Virginia, and North Carolina, including the Carolina Dynamo, a Premier Development League team[3]. He has been a US soccer staff member since 2011 and has previously scouted for the Major League Soccer team Montreal Impact[4].
Education
Nicholls was born and raised in Wolverhampton, England, where he developed his passion for soccer through playing and watching the sport. He graduated from Liverpool John Moores University in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in History.
Coaching Career
Nicholls started his coaching career shortly before his arrival to the United States in 1997. He led and trained several amateur teams in New Orleans, Louisiana and Roanoke, Virginia. Nicholls relocated to Greensboro, North Carolina in 2005, where he worked as a coach and technical director[5].
In 2009, Nicholls was named Assistant Coach for the Carolina Dynamo, and he took over as Head Coach in 2011, leading the team to win the Division Championship from 2011 to 2013[6]. During the 2012 season, the team won the Conference Champions and were National Finalists[7]. In 2013, Nicholls’ last year at the Carolina Dynamo, he led the team to win the USASA National Championship[8][9]. During his time as Head Coach of the Carolina Dynamo, Nicholls was a scout for the MLS team Montreal Impact[2].
Nicholls joined Seattle Sounders FC in 2013 as Academy Head Coach, becoming Academy Director in 2014[10]. He additionally served as the club’s Director of Player Development and GM for the Tacoma Defiance[2]. Under his management, the Seattle Sounders FC’s U17 team won the US Soccer National Championship in 2018[11]. In 2019, the U17 team became the first MLS team to ever win the Generation adidas Champions Division[12]. He is the club’s lead for the NCAA college draft process and has oversight of all developmental recruitment. Nicholls has overseen the professional transition of many players, including Danny Leyva, the youngest player in Seattle Sounders FC history and third youngest to play in an MLS game[13]
Nicholls completed the Fédération Française de Football Formation License (French Federation’s Elite Formation Coaching License) in 2014 and received his certificate in Talent Management, Strategy, and Leadership in Football in 2019 from the FA of England[14]
After several years of coaching at various clubs and gaining several licenses, Nicholls was appointed technical director of Charlotte FC, an MLS team located in North Carolina [1][15]. Here, he has worked on building culture during the COVID-19 pandemic, developing players from the Charlotte area, and assisting in the creation of the team's roster[16] [17][18]
