Marc Tebruegge
Dr Marc Tebruegge is a Clinician Scientist whose work focuses on the development of novel diagnostic tests for tuberculosis (TB). Born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1970, he completed his undergraduate medical training in Germany (Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt), South Africa (University of Cape Town), Australia (University of New South Wales) and the UK (University College London). In 2000 he moved to the UK, to undertake his postgraduate training in Paediatric Infectious Diseases & Immunology, and worked at a number of renowned London teaching hospitals, including King's College Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital, and Great Ormond Street Hospital. He currently holds appointments as Clinical Lecturer in Paediatric Infectious Diseases & Immunology at the University of Southampton, and as Consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases & Immunology at the Evelina London Children's Hospital, Guy's and St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.[1][2]
To date he has authored more than one hundred book chapters and publications in peer-reviewed medical journals, most of which focus on TB diagnostics in children.[3] In addition to his work on novel diagnostic tools for TB, his studies have highlighted the limitations of existing TB diagnostics, particularly of interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs), which are widely used throughout high-resource settings, including Europe and North America.[4][5] His work has provided evidence that the performance of IGRAs is compromised in young children, the elderly and immunocompromised patients.[6][7][8][9] In recognition of his work he was awarded the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health SPARKS Young Investigator of the Year Award in 2014.[10] He is regularly invited to speak at national and international conferences, including the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health Annual Scientific Conference, the European Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases Annual Conference and the McGill Advanced TB Diagnostics Course.[11][12]
He is a member of the World Health Organization Stop TB Partnership New TB Diagnostics Working Group, and the current elected Research Officer of the Paediatric Tuberculosis Network European Trials Group (ptbnet), a network of more than 170 clinicians and scientists with a special interest in Paediatric TB based mainly in Europe. He is also an Academic Editor for several peer-reviewed scientific journals, including the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal (ERR section), PeerJ, Frontiers in Pediatrics, and PLOS ONE, and is an Associate Faculty Member of the Faculty of 1000 Medicine.[13] [14][15][16][17]
